The 9 at 9 Nine things you should know this morning…

EVERY MORNING TheJournal.ie brings you nine things you need to know as you start your day.

1. #MAGEE: There has been a mixed response to the statement by Bishop John Magee yesterday, in which he apologised to those who were abused by clerics in his diocese. Some victims speaking in response to the statement have dismissed his apology as “empty” and “insincere”, while bishops have welcomed his words.

2. #LIBYA: Muammar Gaddafi’s son Saif al-Islam has reappeared in Tripoli this morning, despite reports that he had been captured. Described as “free and defiant”, he claimed that loyalists remained in parts of the capital and would crush the rebellion. Meanwhile, the hunt is on for Gaddafi; there are suspicions he may have fled the country despite an audio broadcast in which he said to Libyans: “I am with you until the end”.

3. #WINDFARM: A €150 million wind farm in Co Clare has been given approval by An Bord Pleanála. The farm will have a maximum capity of 87 megawatts – enough to supply the whole county with energy.

4. #WOMEN: An organisation working with women involved in prostitution says that half of the trafficked women who sought help from them last year were Nigerian. Ruhama also said that technology had aided the spread of prostitution into rural Irish areas.

5. #TURKEY MURDERS: The family of murder victim Marion Graham have arrived back in Ireland, as preparations to bring back the remains of the two victims continue. Graham and her friend Cathy Dinsmore were both found stabbed near Kusadasi last week. Turkish police are still trying to establish the age of the suspect, who faced formal charges in court yesterday.

6. #CORK: A gay couple say they were asked to leave a popular Cork city bar on Friday night for kissing on the dancefloor. The pair allege that a doorman at the Old Oak bar on Oliver Plunkett Street kicked them out after warning them about kissing. It is understood the alleged incident has been reported to the Equality Authority.

7. #DOMESTIC FLIGHTS: Ryanair has announced that it is to scrap its flights between Dublin and Cork from the end of October this year, citing an improved motorway and high charges at the DAA as reasons for the decision.

8. #SYRIA: The UN has put the death toll in Syria at 2,200 people since anti-government protests began in March, the BBC reports. Meanwhile, Syrians bolstered by the fall of Libya’s Muammar Gaddafi have reportedly taken to the streets taunting the country’s president.

9. #DISASTERMIND: It’s the stuff nightmares are made of: appearing on Mastermind and scoring a single point on your specialist subject.

But Simon Curtis has now had insult added to injury, after the British broadcasting watchdog, Ofcom, ruled that it is reasonable for him to be described as “astoundingly thick”. Curtis lodged a complaint with the regulator over his treatment by a Channel 4 clip show – Awfully Good TV – in which comedian David Walliams made a jibe about his intelligence, the Guardian reports.  However, Ofcom rejected Curtis’ argument that this was unfair, saying that – as he had scored a record low score – it was  ”fair comment”. Ouch.
