The 9 at 9 Nine things to know this morning: Gardaí are launching a murder investigation after the death of a Galway man; Dana and Norris continue to seek nominations; and calls are made to criminalise the purchase of sex in Ireland.

EVERY DAY, TheJournal.ie brings you nine things you need to know with your morning cup of coffee.

1. #MURDER: Gardaí are treating as suspicious the death of a Galway publican and schoolteacher, whose body was discovered over the weekend. A post-mortem examination carried out on the remains John Kenny, 54, yesterday found that he died as a result of injuries sustained in an assault.

2. #ÁRAS11: Independent Presidential hopefuls Dana Rosemary Scallon and Senator David Norris will meet with several councils in a bid to get their support today. Each has the backing of two councils, but needs another two to meet the minimum of four councils by tomorrow’s deadline.

3. #SHOOTING: A man in his 30s has been hospitalised after sustaining a gunshot wound during an incident in Tubbercurry, Co Sligo, last night. Another man, also aged in his 30s, was arrested at the scene at Connolly Park, just outside the centre of the town following the shooting. Gardaí are appealing for information.

4. #PROSTITUTION: A law banning the purchase of sex would reduce both prostitution and sex trafficking in Ireland, according to visiting experts. During an information exchange organised by the Immigrant Council of Ireland and Ruhama – and attended by Swedish and Norwegian police – it was revealed that more than 1,000 women and girls are trafficked into Ireland annually and subjected to sexual exploitation, rapes and beatings.

5. #DERRY: Three men have been arrested following the discovery of a viable device inside a vehicle on the Buncrana Road, Derry, yesterday. The men, aged 59, 49 and 46, were arrested on suspicion of dissident republican activity.

6. #EURO CRISIS: US President Barack Obama has said that the European debt crisis is “scaring the world”, adding that EU leaders have not been quick enough in dealing with the zone’s economic problems. Obama said that the difficulties being experienced by EU nations were a result of not having “fully dealt with all the challenges that their banking system faced”.

7. #PHILIPPINES: A powerful typhoon has hit the Philippines, causing the evacuation of 100,000 people, two fatalities and bringing work in the capital to grind to a halt. The storm is expected to last until Thursday, when it is due to move over China.

8. #AMAZON: Bolivian President Evo Morales has halted wok on road being built through the Amazon rainforest, saying that a referendum needed to be held on whether the project should go ahead, according to the Guardian. Yesterday, the country’s Defence Minister resigned in protest over the government’s handling of protests after police teargassed and arrested demonstrators.

9. #STRESS: Young people are far more likely to experience work-related stress than their parents’ generation, according to a new survey – with more than half of respondents saying that work-related stress was a significant factor in their lives.

However, those under 30 were also more likely to call in sick to work – usually for reasons like feeling tired or run down – while 85 per cent of the over-55s said they would not call in sick unless they were bedridden.
