The 9 at 9 Nine things you should know this morning…

EVERY DAY, TheJournal.ie brings you nine things you need to know with your morning cup of coffee.

1. #WORK STOPPAGE: Emergency Department nurses at Limerick’s Mid-Western Regional Hospital will conduct another four-hour work stoppage from 8.30am today. It will be the third such stoppage in two weeks. Nurses are protesting at what they say are unsafe and overcrowded conditions at the Emergency Department.

2. #LIMERICK: A 32-year-old male is scheduled to appear before Limerick District Court this morning, charged in connection with the murder of father-of-two Martin Purcell in the city last week. Purcell, whose body was discovered last Friday, had died as a result of several stab wounds.

3. #RACISM: Racism is an everyday occurrence for many migrants living in this country, according to a report by the Immigrant Council of Ireland. Denise Charlton, Chief Executive of the ICI, said most respondents to the study had revealed that they had suffered ‘racist incidents’ and felt that racism was more prevalent in Ireland than in other countries they had lived in.

4. #JOBSWATCH: A bidder has emerged for online poker company Full Tilt, which employs over 500 people through various subsidiary companies in Ireland – however fears remain for the hundreds of Irish jobs with the company. The company had its gambling licence withdrawn after gambling authorities concluded the site had misled officials about its financial status.

5. #DIABETES: One in three families in Ireland are affected by diabetes, according to new research by the Diabetes Federation of Ireland. More than 180,000 people are living with either type 1 or type 2 diabetes, according to the reports, and that figure is expected to rise to 230,000 over the next ten years.

6. #DEBT CRISIS: Eurozone finance ministers have decided to delay a decision on Greece’s next €8bn loan package until later in the month – however the possibility allowing the country to default on its sovereign debt has been ruled out.

7. #AMANDA KNOX: After being acquitted of the 2007 murder of UK student Meredith Kercher, Amanda Knox is due return to Seattle today. Italian public prosecutors are expected to appeal yesterday’s decision, however this will not prevent Knox from returning home for the first time in more than four years.

8. #PIRATES: Two Somali men have been sentenced to life in prison in the US over yacht hijacking earlier this year in which four Americans were killed, reports the BBC.

9. #FREQUENT FLYERS: British Airways has hit on a novel idea to express gratitude to passengers who clock up air miles with them: a course on how to survive a plane crash.

Members of the airline’s Executive Club will be instructed on how to improve their chances of survival if disaster were to strike on board, reports the Mirror… (free air tickets would would have been nicer, in our opinion).
