The 9 at 9 Nine things you should know this morning…

EVERY MORNING, TheJournal.ie brings you nine things you should know with your morning coffee…

1. #KILDARE: A male pedestrian in his 30s died after being struck by a vehicle in Co Kildare at about 10pm last night. It was the second fatal traffic incident to occur in the country yesterday: a 59-year-old woman was also killed at about 4.30pm when her car collided with an SUV.

2. #CORK: Gardaí are continuing to investigate the circumstances surrounding the fatal stabbing of a man in Cork yesterday. Gerard Delaney, 51, of Mahon in Cork, died from stab wounds and head injuries following a row outside a pub in Ballyphehane in the early hours of Tuesday morning.

3. #SLIGO: A man in his 20s was arrested last night in connection with a stabbing incident in Co Sligo. The victim, aged in his 30s, was discovered by Gardaí in the early hours of yesterday morning and brought to hospital with injuries that were not life-threatening. In a separate incident some hours later, another man was also taken to hospital after being stabbed in Sligo Town.

4. #FRAUD: There has been a significant rise in the number of people anonymously reporting social welfare fraud to the authorities in the past five years. Figures published in the Irish Times today show that more than 10,000 emails were sent last year by members of the public alleging that someone known to them was committing welfare fraud.

5. #COALITION: Taoiseach Enda Kenny has admitted that the Fine Gael-Labour coalition has faced some challenges during its time in power so far but insisted that it remains “strong”, the Irish Examiner reports.

6. #KIM JONG IL: The two-day state funeral of the late North Korean leader Kim Jong Il is to take place today in Pyongyang, NPR reports. No foreign delegations are attending.

7. #SYRIA: Arab League monitors are continuing their observance work in Syria following the deadly state crackdown on anti-regime protests. Activists said that several people died yesterday when tens of thousands of people took to the streets to denounce the government, reports the BBC. An estimated 5,000 people have died so far in the country, according to the UN.

8. #ISRAEL: Thousands of Israelis gathered in the city of Beit Shemesh last night to protest against Jewish ultra-Orthodox extremism, which has seen growing attacks on a local religious Zionist girls’ primary school, reports the Jerusalem Post. Some ultra-Orthodox extremists, who call for gender segregation, have condemned the schoolgirls for dressing “immodestly”.

9. #SCRUTINY: Gawker has identified a sentence that is highly likely to have US citizens trailed by Department of Homeland Security agents monitoring social networks, namely: “My cow collapsed, and now there’s a human to animal infection outbreak among illegal immigrants”.

Hot words and phrases include “human to animal,” “collapse,” “infection,” “outbreak,” and “illegal immigrants”, according to the Electronic Privacy Information Centre, and could allow agents to record a person’s activity and share information about them with local, state, federal, and foreign governments.
