The Daily Fix: Saturday

In this evening’s fix: The latest on the Gaza flotilla saga, pictures galore from Dublin and beyond, the Vatican is back in black…and the luckiest squirrel alive

EVERY DAY, TheJournal.ie brings you a round-up of the day’s news as well as the bits and pieces you may have missed.

  • A senior police officer has said there is no evidence to suggest that there was any paramilitary involvement in violence which flared in Belfast last night. Seven people were arrested after the disorder broke out in East Belfast following a ‘mini Twelfth’ of July parade.
  • An American tourist has died after being hit by a truck while walking on Inch Strand in Dingle, Co. Kerry this morning. A motorcyclist was fatally injured meanwhile after his bike collided with a van in Ballymote in Sligo.
  • The future of around 700 jobs at an online poker firm based in Dublin could be more secure after a group of European investors stepped in with funds. Pocket Kings is the service provider for Full Tilt Poker, which had its licence suspended earlier this week. Its CEO has been charged in the US with running illegal gambling operations.
  • In pictures: Thousands of people took part in a Pro-Life rally in Dublin today. They were greeted on O’Connell Street by Pro-Choice supporters.
  • The Irish Ship to Gaza group has said it has doubts about the validity of a Turkish report which states that Turkish police have found that the MV Saoirse may not have been damaged as a result of sabotage. The remaining members of the Irish crew are returning to Ireland, while the captain of the American boat The Audacity of Hope has been arrested in Greece. Israel continues to deny any involvement in the damage of the boats.
  • Eurozone finance ministers are in talks today and are expected to sign off on the next tranche of Greece’s bailout fund. Michael Noonan is among those taking part in a conference call which includes discussion about a second bailout for the country.
  • Slideshow: It was a free for all on the Red Luas Line today after the latest extension to the line which will take it from Belgard to Saggart. Minister for Transport Leo Varadkar announced that a decision on linking the two lines, and a decision on Metro North, won’t be made until September.
  • The Vatican is back in the black after nearly three years in the red. It has returned to profit even though donations fell by nearly €15 million. It made a profit of €9.85 million in 2010.
  • Having withdrawal symptoms after the nuptials of Prince William and Kate Middleton? Feeling like another royal wedding fix? If the answer to this question is no, then skip right on to the next nugget. Otherwise, feast your eyes as Prince Albert ties the knot in Monaco.

This kind of story is like putting a satellite image over the Sahara desert and saying its going to be warm and dry.

The weather in Ireland is OK. A little rain does no harm.

I was just in the Czech Republic at a festival for 7 days and it “rained” once in Prague. I say rained, but it was literally a couple of drops. Looked around the street and all these Czech people were looking up wondering what the hell was happening. Some dose coming home.

The Czech Republic can keep the winters they have every year, those 2 harsh winters Ireland got a couple of years back is the norm for them every winter and sometimes even worse. No thanks.
