The Evening Fix… now with added badvertising

Here’s all the things we learned, loved and shared today.

HERE ARE THE things you need to know as we round off the day in three easy steps.

THINGS WE LEARNED:

#AOIFE PHELAN: A man has been arrested in relation to the murder of missing 30-year-old Aoife Phelan, Gardaí have confirmed this evening. The man, aged in his 20s, is being detained in Portlaoise Garda Station under Section 4 of the Criminal Justice Act, 1984. Aoife, who was four months pregnant, was last seen on October 25 when she left a friend’s house.

#CYBER-BULLYING: A nationwide consultation involving over 300 primary school pupils has led the Children’s Ombudsman to recommend that schools take more affirmative action to prevent cyber-bullying. The report comes after two Irish teenagers took their own lives in response to bullying they had been subjected to online.

#SAVINGS: The Office of Public Works has confirmed plans to close the Government’s publications sales office on Dublin’s Molesworth Street, as part of wider cost-cutting measures. The move is expected to save €300,000 a year.

#AIRPORTS: US Airways has announced a new daily flight between Philadelphia and Shannon Airport, which will commence on 23 May 2013 and operate until 3September 2013. However, Aer Arann has today announced that it is to terminate services at Waterford Airport from 6 January – a move that will affect services from Waterford Airport to London Southend, London Luton and Manchester.

#BADVERTISING: Bookmaker Paddy Power is sticking to its guns over a half-page advertisement that appeared in this morning’s Irish Times, which featured a photo of a laughing Barack Obama alongside the words: “Sorry, Romney. You’re not black or cool.” The Advertising Standards Authority of Ireland said it would be beginning an investigation into the advert after receiving a complaint from a member of the public.

THINGS WE LOVED:

  • Serial commenters beware: the internet is watching you. If you’re in any doubt of that, check out this Tumblr which some patient soul has created to track the musings of “Ken M” as he travels through cyberspace. Ken’s nuggets of wisdom include: “Planets are filled with hot lava while moons are filled with air. What draws these two different things together?” Hmmm… who wants to tell him? (Thanks to reader Lisa Smith for the tip!)
  • Get ready for a brain melt – IMDB has put together a head-spinning video of its top 250 films in two minutes. Can you name them all?
