HERE ARE THE things you need to know as we round off the day in three easy steps.

THINGS WE LEARNED

#ARKLOW: A man’s body was recovered from an Arklow beach this afternoon after a car drove off the pier and entered the water earlier this morning. The second occupant, a female, was rescued from the vehicle and taken to St Columcille’s Hospital for treatment.

#POTHOLE: Three Cork County Council workers have been suspended after filling a pothole in what was viewed to be an unsafe manner. Fine Gael councillor Tim Lombard said the suspensions represented health and safety “gone mad”.

#KNOX: Italy’s highest court of appeal has overturned the acquittal of US student Amanda Knox and ordered a retrial over the murder of her British housemate in what prosecutors said was a drug-fuelled sex attack.

#CITIZEN’S ARREST: Around 40 neighbours from the village of Turloughmore, Co Galway, used their power of citizen’s arrest when they apprehended three men who were attempting to burgle the home of an elderly couple in the area.

#DEATH: A 14-year-old girl has been found dead alongside five dogs at a house in Atherton, Manchester this afternoon. The police described the dogs as “aggressive and out of control” and said her injuries were consistent with being attacked by canines.
