Enda Kenny and Micheál Martin Sasko Lazarov

The next Taoiseach: The people want Micheál over Enda - but a lot want neither

A new poll conducted in the aftermath of the election, has some fascinating findings.

MORE PEOPLE WOULD like to see Micheál Martin become the next Taoiseach over the current incumbent Enda Kenny, according to a new poll.

However, four-in-10 people say they would rather see neither the Fine Gael leader nor his Fianna Fáil counterpart become head of the next government in a Claire Byrne Live/Amárach Research poll carried out today.

The result reflects the fractured outcome of the election with neither Fine Gael or Fianna Fáil emerging with anywhere near the number of seats required to form an overall majority.

With the make-up of the next government unclear, and both parties coming under pressure to enter negotiations with each other, it is expected that talks to form a new government will take a number of weeks.

This evening Martin called for all parties to agree on widespread Dáil reform before any negotiations on the next government take place.

The cabinet meets tomorrow with the Fine Gael-Labour coalition expected to remain on as a caretaker government for a number of weeks.

The poll asked respondents: Who would you rather see as Taoiseach?

Just over a fifth, 23%, answered Kenny while 37% said they would rather see Martin as Taoiseach.  A total of 40% said they would rather see neither of the two leaders take the job.

Another poll shows that over one-in-10 people would vote differently if the general election was held again with 12% saying they would change their  preferences.

The vast majority of people, 81%, said they would not change their minds while 7% said they didn’t know.

The poll was conducted by Amárach Research on Monday, 29 February. The survey panel comprises more than 1,000 adults who all own a smartphone. More details here.
