SET BACK FROM Main Street in Youghal, Co Cork, The Red House is a remarkable property.

Dating back to 1703, the seven-bedroom home was designed by Dutch architect Claud Leuventhen for the prominent Uniake family of Co Cork. It comes to the market in fantastic condition with many of its original features intact, making for a one-of-a-kind 18th century property in Ireland.

It goes without saying that, at 317 years old, The Red House is steeped in history. The terrazzo design at the entrance pays homage to former Justice of the Peace, Thomas Farrell, who created it after moving in in 1900. In later years, the property became the parochial house for the seaside town, with stained glass being added then.

The name, unsurprisingly, comes from the terracotta bricks which were imported for the house’s construction. A dual entryway sets the property back from the street, although its striking colour ensures that it catches the eye of passersby.

Somewhat unexpectedly, The Red House enjoys four acres of grounds – most of which are to the rear. Here, there are private walled gardens, several patio areas, mature trees and shrubs and a large lawn – making for the perfect spot to both unwind and entertain. There’s also off-street parking for one car to the side of the house.

As for the interior, the most recent owners have restored the 6,818 sq ft mansion to include parquet flooring, timber-lined ceilings, original wood panelling and hand-carved bannisters. Each room of the property is filled with character thanks to the level of attention paid to every detail, and complements its 18th century roots while still being suitable for modern living.

On the ground floor, the hallway leads to the inner hall, where there’s a highly impressive feature staircase. To the right is the drawing room with three picture windows and access to the garden room, while to the left there’s the formal dining room and two studies.

A bathroom, kitchen, living room, utility room and conservatory, which overlooks the beautiful gardens, complete the accommodation at this level. With a room for virtually every occasion, the property is well suited for family dinners, hosting guests and quiet evenings spent relaxing.

Moving up the grand staircase to the first floor, there are four bedrooms here. The master suite is located at this level and boasts a large dressing room, as well as a private balcony with views to the gardens. Three bedrooms and a large family room on the second floor, plus a large basement, complete the accommodation.
