“A FEELING OF pride came over me,” says Laura (11) from Holy Family National School when she talks about the Coolest Club international award her coding club had won.

The small DEIS school in Dun Laoghire, Dublin were chosen out of 1,000 young people from 15 countries as the winner of the Coolest Club award at the Coolest Projects International 2018 competition which is sponsored by CoderDojo, a volunteer-based community project that teaches programming for young children.

Aedemar Cooke, a teacher who organises the club, says they were lucky to involved with Virgin Media and Go4IT who helped bring CoderDojo to their school.

“They [students] all picked it up really and quickly,” says Ms Cooke, “though most of them only get to code when they’re in school for one hour a week.”

When asked why they like working with computers and coding Kian (11) had this to say:

“It makes me happy while coding because I feel like I’m…like a professional making games.”
