Which every day vegetable can help prevent arthritis?

Clue: your mother told you to eat it so you can grow up big and tall.

LONG THE SCOURGE of greens-resistant children, broccoli may do more than make kids grow up big and strong.

Researchers at the University of East Anglia have found that sulforaphane, which is also found in sprouts and cabbage, slows the destruction of cartilage in joints.

This destruction is a cause of osteoarthritis, which affects the hands, feet, spine, hips and knees.

The research team say that broccoli could help block enzymes that destroy joints.

The research team say that having improved the lot of mice, they want to carry out tests on humans.

John Church of Arthritis Ireland says increases in funding to research in the area are ongoing.

“Arthritis affects almost one million people in Ireland, from newborn babies through to the elderly.

“The advancement of rheumatological research is a key objective for Arthritis Ireland as the ultimate goal for all people living with arthritis is to find a cure.

“With that in mind the organisation has made significant investment in the creation of the Arthritis Ireland Chair of Rheumatology in UCD to which Prof Gerry Wilson was recently appointed. ”

Wilson will deliver his inaugural lecture on his key objectives as chair at Arthritis Ireland’s Working on a Cure event in Our Lady’s Hospice on Thursday, 10 October 10 at 7:30pm.
