Rescuers drain reservoir in search for missing man Tom Kennedy

The 81-year-old went missing three weeks ago.

A RESERVOIR AT Dunsink Lane in west Dublin is currently being drained, as part of the ongoing search for Finglas man Tom Kennedy, who has now been missing from his home for three weeks.

The 81-year-old’s son Vincent told the Irish Daily Star that rescue units had begun draining the reservoir off the Navan road motorway in Dublin, having already scoured the nearby Royal Canal and Tolka river.

The operation is expected to take until Thursday.

Kennedy was last seen on the night of 29 July, when he left his home in the Virginia Park area of Finglas at around 9pm, without bringing his mobile phone with him.

At the time, his family told TheJournal.ie they were particularly concerned for his wellbeing because it was totally out of character for him not to return home at night, and because he had recently experienced health problems.

Since he went missing, his family, friends, Dublin Civil Defence, the Gardaí and many dozens of volunteers have been searching tirelessly for him throughout north and west Dublin.

Tom’s wife Fran spoke movingly with Pat Kenny on Newstalk recently, recounting the night her husband went missing:

Every night he made sure last few cups were washed and watched sci-fi on television and I would go upstairs and watch my programmes.
I thought he was downstairs. I heard him in the bathroom, I heard him in the other bedroom , pottering, and I heard the bin going out and I thought he had gone back in to watch the television.

She said it wasn’t until about 11pm that they discovered he wasn’t in the house.

“My grandson had come in from work and I said to him to bring granddad down his tablets and he said he wasn’t in the house,” she said, adding that they looked everywhere for him and then panicked.

Gardaí have repeatedly renewed their appeal for information from the public about Tom Kennedy’s whereabouts.

He is described as 5’3″/5’4″ and of slim build. He was wearing dark trousers, black velcro shoes and a white polo shirt with blue stripes.

He was also wearing his glasses and watch when he left home.
