Three men charged in connection with Irish hero's death in Dominica

Joseph Costello was killed as he went to the aid of an American couple who were being attacked.

AUTHORITIES IN DOMINICA have charged three men with murder and assault  following the death of an Irish man on the island

Forty-three-year-old Joseph Costello was killed when he went to the aid of a US couple who were set upon by three men brandishing a machete, a hatchet and a plank of wood.

The US couple own a hotel on the island – the Pagua Bay Guest House Hotel in Marigot. They have since been treated and released from hospital.

The three men have been remanded to an island prison. Dominica News Online names the men, from the Wesley area of the island, as Eustace Benjamin, Don Prosper and Sillas Bruno.

Police spokesperson Claude Weekes has said that the charges against the three men “would assist in allaying the fears of the general public including visitors”.

Dominican News Online also reports that Costello had worked and lived on the island, managing a hotel.
