With over 130 seats still in play, these are some of the key races to keep an eye on today.
1. Last Green standing?
The Green Party had a very bad election – they could lose most (or possibly all) of their 12 TDs. Leader Roderic O’Gorman is battling to keep his seat in Dublin West.
Three people have been elected already in that five-seater constituency – Fianna Fáil’s Jack Chambers, Sinn Féin’s Paul Donnelly and Fine Gael’s Emer Currie.
O’Gorman is currently in fifth-place so it’ll all come down to how transfers are distributed. Arts Minister Catherine Martin is also fighting to keep her seat in Dublin Rathdown.
Junior ministers Joe O’Brien and Ossian Smyth have already lost their seats in Dublin Fingal West and Dún Laoghaire respectively. Neasa Hourigan has been eliminated in Dublin Central.
Outgoing TD Francis Noel Duffy has been eliminated in Dublin South-West, while Pippa Hackett is out of the race in Offaly. Steven Matthews is likely to be eliminated in Wicklow.
Speaking yesterday, O’Gorman told reporters: “It is clear the Green Party has not had a good day.”
“We got a mandate in 2020 to go into Government, and we did that.
But it is hard for a smaller party in Government, that has long been the history in Ireland.

“We hoped going into the election that we could buck that trend, but we haven’t been able to do that.”
2. Ministers on the way out?
Health Minister Stephen Donnelly has a battle on his hands to keep his seat in Wicklow. Fine Gael leader Simon Harris is the only person elected in this constituency so far (after one count).
With three more seats up for grabs, Sinn Féin’s John Brady is currently in second place, followed by the Social Democrats’ Jennifer Whitmore, and Donnelly in fourth. As is so often the case, it’ll come down to transfers.
Anne Rabbitte, Minister of State with Special Responsibility for Disabilities, lost her seat in Galway East on the ninth count this morning. Independent TD Seán Canney was re-elected on the sixth count yesterday, and Rabbitte’s Fianna Fáil colleague Albert Dolan was elected on the eighth count earlier today.
3. Monk on the way in?
One of the constituencies everyone has their eye on is Dublin Central.
Sinn Féin leader Mary Lou McDonald took its first seat yesterday on the third count, with three more seats still up for grabs.
Gary Gannon of the Social Democrats is chasing the quota of 6,551 – he’s less than 200 votes away. Fine Gael’s Paschal Donohoe isn’t far behind him.

The fight for the last seat is coming down to Labour Senator Marie Sherlock and Gerry ‘The Monk’ Hutch (who currently has the edge).
4. Tight races for sitting TDs
Paul Murphy of People Before Profit–Solidarity has a fight on his hands to keep his seat in Dublin South-West. No-one has been elected in the five-seater after one count. As things stand, Murphy is currently fifth so it’s all to play for.
Long-standing Fine Gael TD Bernard Durkan could struggle to be re-elected in Kildare North. After one count, no-one has been elected. Durkan is currently in sixth place in the five-seater, behind his running mate Joe Neville.
5. A hat-trick for Sinn Fein in D-SC?
Sinn Féin could possibly take three of the four seats in Dublin South-Central. No-one has been elected yet (after six counts) but Aengus Ó Snodaigh, Máire Devine and Daithí Doolan are all in with a chance.

But will the SocDems become the new sacrificial scapegoat for FFG and go the way of the Progressive Democrats into extinction? If they didn’t learn from what happened to labour and now to the greens then fool me once…
@Kevvy kerrr: well your hard right anti immigration crowd got zero seats. And didn’t he post in several languages for those staying at IPA centres to be able to read them? I read it in the journal who debunked that one case. Either way, the anti immigration crowd fell flat on their face with no seats
@Brendan O’Brien: Yes he did. It was reckless and it cost the entire green party. He is single-handedly responsible for their demise. Brilliant stuff. The fact they got hammered and ran says it all as to how the electorate feel about unfettered immigration. Your borderless wet dream is over. LOL
@9QRixo8H: hey there… fair play & kudos for showing up after that overwhelming victory for peace in the US…. what was your catchphrase again…. something really pathetic….oh yeah….” I’m Crying for Madam president”…..was that it????.?LOL
@9QRixo8H: Yes: ‘Many falsely allege that O’Gorman ‘invited’ asylum seekers to Ireland by sending a series of posts on X [then Twitter] in February 2021 in eight different languages, including Arabic, Georgian, Albanian, Somalian, about a plan to end Direct Provision.
O’Gorman subsequently explained that he sent the posts in the eight languages – which included English and Irish – because they were the languages most commonly spoken by those already living in the Direct Provision system.
Despite this, the claim has gained traction among anti-immigrant groups and tends to appear regularly in online discussions about O’Gorman, or in social media posts beneath news stories about him.
It leans into the Great Replacement theory, a white nationalist, far-right conspiracy which claims white citizens are being replaced by non-white populations, which is popular among many anti-immigrant groups who are active in Ireland.’
@9QRixo8H: welcome back. Good to see your over the shock of “Madamepresident2024″ absolute flop of an election. Are you ok now? I’ve never seen anyone being so certain about being so wrong.
@Tommy Breen: When the last tree is cut down, the last fish eaten, and the last stream poisoned, you will realize that you cannot eat money. Native American saying
@Brendan O’Brien: Whatever his intention, the tweets were read worldwide and interpreted as an invitation to come to Ireland, look at the jump in numbers after his tweets!
@Marvin Dollery: your analysis, as usual, is illogical. The Green’s demise has got nothing to do with immigration – immigration policy of course is not going to change materially with the new government. A perception of the greens imposing taxes is what cost them, along with the usual junior coalition partner kicking that they got. And of course, just like the immigration policy, carbon taxes are here to stay also. Your pals on the far right, which you were calling centre right during the week, have thankfully been roundly rejected – that’s what the Irish people think of your views on immigration, and Muslims in particular
@Brian Hunt: A problem for the Green Party they were so focussed on the climate that they lost sight of those needing housing, which is on page 24 of their manifesto. All parties need to be concerned about climate impact, they also need to put people first and foremost, while addressing the climate issues they can be implemented as part of the social need for housing. Build better and sustainable housing but do that using direct labour and not jobs for friends of the ‘boys’ in power.
The percentage of Co2 in the atmosphere is 4/10 of one percent, for a long time it was 3/10 of one percent, below 2/10 and plant life becomes compromised. Simply by promoting policies of replanting forests, and greenspaces ,and policies discouraging the cutting of forests without management, and replanting, naturally Co2 will e absorbed, its a natural processes, the lies and the taxation put on us by the Greens about Evs and Climate Change, our Climate has always changed, has come home to roost , good riddance
@Gavin Power: When the last tree is cut down, the last fish eaten, and the last stream poisoned, you will realize that you cannot eat money. Native American saying
@Marvin Dollery: Can to point to anything inaccurate in the article? Of course you can’t. You’re a baby who lives entirely by his feelings and thinks everything he doesn’t understand is a ‘hoax’.
@Frank Mc Carthy: ‘Tisn’t fed up you’ll be a ghrá when you’re up to your oxter in flood waters. There’ll be feck all fed to be had. Ask the good people of Valencia.’Tisn’t fed up you’ll be a ghrá when you’re up to your oxter in flood waters. There’ll be feck all fed to be had. Ask the good people of Valencia.

Despite them being the loudest and angriest on social media, not one seat went to the anti immigration crowd. Same as 2020. Lose election after election. Most likely disband with all the money they’re haemorrhaging.
@9QRixo8H: the real question is who is funding them? Okay you have the likes of Philip Dwyer who has a lucrative racket going for him, but there’s more to the picture I think
@Brendan O’Brien: didn’t Malachy Stevenson claim the poor child attacked in Parnell St had died and that it was being covered up? There are no depths these people won’t plunge to.
@Dermot Blaine: *Steenson, didn’t hear him say that about the child, if it’s true that’s awful. the child’s mother did say “the little girl we knew died that day” non verbal and eating through a peg. So yea thankfully all that is sorted now Dermot
@Dermot Blaine: Of all the things to be outraged at in relation to that terrorist attack.. You basically side with the filthbag who stabbed children in broad daylight. I think it is you who knows no bounds. Disgraceful, reprehensible and insensitive.
@Brendan O’Brien: You’re known for the begging alright.. stop pretending to be holier than thou and get out into the daylight. So tragically virtuous it’s painful.
By entering into coalition with FF/FG Hutch Criminal Organization can have their personal minister for justice – Jerry Hutch. That is entirely possible. Just weeks ago Michael Martin said that Monks election campaign is not going to materialize but it did!
Greens cudnt see anything else but climate change the fact that the usa and china cudnt give a rats ass about it they kept trying the screw the irish people no matter what the outcome. Hope fully this goverment see the wrong the greens kept puttting out !
Delighted for Catherine Martin. Completely incompetent, the RTE debacle said it all. At least now don’t have to look at her speaking out of the side of her mouth. The Greens alienated everyone with their policies on transport, bike lanes and wasting public money all while there is little alternative to driving a car with our hopeless transport system. Good riddance
