'The Guardians': Jamal Khashoggi and other journalists named Time Person of the Year

The magazine’s editor-in-chief said “manipulation and abuse of truth” is a common thread in many of this year’s headlines.

SAUDI JOURNALIST JAMAL Khashoggi and several other journalists have been named Time magazine’s Person of The Year under the group heading ‘The Guardians’.

Khashoggi was murdered in October this year at his country’s consulate in Istanbul.

Philippine journalist Maria Ressa and Reuters reporters Wa Lone and Kyaw Soe Oo, currently imprisoned in Myanmar were also honoured.

And the staff of the Capital Gazette in United States, where five members were killed in the shooting in June this year, were included.

Edward Felsenthal, editor-in-chief of the magazine explained why ‘The Guardians’ are Person of the Year:

“Today, democracy around the world faces its biggest crisis in decades, its foundations undermined by invective from on high and toxins from below, by new technologies that power ancient impulses, by a poisonous cocktail of strongmen and weakening institutions.

From Russia to Riyadh to Silicon Valley, manipulation and abuse of truth is the common thread in so many of this year’s major headlines, an insidious and growing threat to freedom.

He said these journalists are honoured today for “taking great risks in pursuit of greater truths, for the imperfect but essential quest for the facts that are central to civil discourse, for speaking up and for speaking out”.

People always misunderstand Time person of the year. These are the same people that try belittle it claiming Time put Stalin on the cover etc and that shows that Time don’t have good judgement.

Yes, they did put him and others on the cover.

But person of the year isn’t about the person being the greatest all of the time that does good. It’s about people that have had a massive impact either negative or positive in our world.

That’s why they had Stalin, Hitler, Nixon and Trump but in the other hand they’ve had Martin Luther King, David Ho and Ebola Fighters.

Their choices this year are spot on

@Dave Thomas: he was in 2016,
He has faked covers of time magazine to make false claims that he has been on the cover numerous times though.

Even if he wasn’t ever person of the year the point still stands, being on the cover wouldn’t automatically mean he is a good person or that he has done good in the world.

@Dave Thomas: Trump was Time person of rhe year 2016. To be fair his election was a massive shock and he definitely dominated the headlines for good/bad.

Khasoggi is a hero, and deserves recognition. Especially when trump, putin, and Bone Saw salman rejected the inclusion of SCIENCE into global warming directive in Poland last week.

@danny: “person of the year” from Time? Not much of accolade? Where’s your head at? Even if they’re wrong a lot – especially recently – doesn’t mean it’s not an accolade. A major international magazine Person of the Year not an accolade LOL

@Christopher Ryan: well seeing that hitler, stalin and churchill have won it, doesn’t seem like much of an accolade to be celebrated among that group

    @Myles Collier:
Yes well when you take everything out of context in life, nothing means anything. Like when the Wehrmacht invaded Poland. It didn’t actually happen just now. It happened in the past. Therefore it has no meaning or every meaning.
Passive aggressive stubbornness isn’t actually a quality worth touting.

It’s a massive gesture and should be seen that way. These journalists or a fat orange angry amoral loudmouth bully.
    Which would you prefer?
