Tsunami warning after earthquake off the coast of California lifted

The 7.0-magnitude quake was recorded at a depth of just 10 kilometres.

LAST UPDATE | 5 Dec 2024

A TSUNAMI WARNING that had been put in place in the US has now been lifted.

The warning has been place after a powerful earthquake struck off the coast of California, US seismologists have said.

The US Tsunami Warning System said there was no remaining warning or threat following the 7.0-magnitude quake recorded at a shallow depth about 100 kilometers off the coast.

The quake was recorded at a depth of just 10 kilometres, almost 100 kilometres west-southwest of Ferndale, according to the United States Geological Survey.

“Based on preliminary earthquake parameters… hazardous tsunami are possible for coasts located within 300 KM of the earthquake epicenter,” said a warning issued by the National Weather Service’s Tsunami Warning Center in Honolulu.

The warning noted that no areas had yet experienced any waves, but that anyone near a coastline should be alert to the possibility of danger.
