'Home means so much': The story behind this heartwarming ad set in an Irish back garden

Home Store + More’s TV ad pays tribute to a familiar 2021 theme: time outdoors with loved ones.

HOME IS A HAVEN, a place to retreat to after a tough day, a space to relax in when you need to switch off, and a place where you’ll always find comfort.

That’s the message Home Store + More is sharing in its latest TV ad, which opens with teenager Rachel getting the news that she’s missed out on the lead in the school play.

It’s a hard blow, but one that’s soon softened by the promise of a family barbecue and the chance to show off her dramatic talents to her mum, dad, brother and granny.

“Home has a renewed importance for many of us right now. It matters more than ever before and we wanted to get across the value of those small and happy moments spent with loved ones,” says Matthias Wenk, marketing director with Home Store + More.

The ad has an unmistakably Irish feel – the school scenes were shot at Dublin’s Clontarf Rugby Club, and the garden party was filmed at the rear of a real-life house in Balbriggan. And in true native style, the weather wasn’t quite summer-appropriate on shoot day, says Wenk:

We shot this back in February, so you’re shooting in the wrong season and trying to make things look nice and warm while avoiding the rain. But we made it work!

Using an al fresco family dinner as the central point of the ad was a subtle nod to the global events of the last year or so, and the fact that gatherings with loved ones might look a little different right now.

“We wanted this ad to pay tribute to what that idea of ‘home’ means, but to also pay tribute to the time we’re in,” says Wenk. “So instead of seeing a big summer party with lots of people, it’s just a small family barbecue in the back garden.”

Rachel and her family will already be familiar to those who’ve seen Home Store + More’s other recent TV spots. So far we’ve seen the family sharing breakfast together, baking together and even moving Granny in as a Christmas wish come true.

“It really means a lot to us to have that continuation,” says Wenk. “It’s our Home Store + More family. The actors have such good chemistry together too, which made the shoot great fun.”

The idea of a “happy home” is of course linked to the people in it, but it’s linked to the items those people use every day, too. That’s another core message of the ad, says Wenk:

We wanted to highlight the simple elements that make a house a home, like a barbecue and outdoor furniture in the back garden.
