Two arrested after sledgehammer robbery on Westmeath post office

Gardaí in Mullingar are questioning two men after an incident where men armed with a knife and sledgehammer held up a post office.

GARDAÍ IN WESTMEATH have arrested two men after a robbery at a post office in the county this morning – in which staff were threatened with a sledgehammer.

The robbery occurred at the post office in Tyrrellspass, around 11 miles south of Mullingar, at approximately 9:30am this morning.

Two men entered of the post office, armed with a sledgehammer and a knife, and threatened the staff on duty, demanding cash.

They left later with an undisclosed amount of cash. There were no injuries sustained by staff.

Two men were later arrested in a follow-up operation and are being detained at Mullingar Garda Station, under Section 30 of the Offences against the State Act, 1939.

Cash and implements used in the robbery were also recovered.
