AFTER SEVEN WEEKS of campaigning, it’s polling day in the UK.
Now, more than ever, it seems that an election across the water really matters for Ireland. But, will that tempt you to stay up into the early hours?
We’re asking: Will you stay up to watch UK election coverage?
Poll Results:
No (5941)
I'll watch but won't stay up too late (3354)
Yes (1638)
I don't know (137)

@Bar Bar Drinks: The exit poll is an excellent barometer, and has always been very accurate and is far better than any poll pre election. The election exit poll will be released at 10 in the evening and then you will know, no need to stay up.
@Bar Bar Drinks: Actually Bar Bar, you wont hear anyone being elected to Dudly north or Sidcup because this is a snap election, so local elections don’t coincide. The last snap election was 1992. I acknowledge your indifference in advance :)
The print media, social media and the US all dictate a Theresa May and Tory victory.
Corbyn and Labour did not get a fair opportunity. That’s life. Democracy and public opinion are much easier to manipulate than ever before. That’s just the way it is. Labour will have to do its best in opposition.
@Tony Daly: Or maybe Corbyn is seen as too far left with an irresponsible approach to budgeting. Don’t like the result? It couldn’t possible be that the majority just don’t agree with your politics oh God no it must be something else
Such utter tripe. The problem with Labour is that Corbyn is unelectable. A government needs to understand fiscal policy and needs to be able to show a sound fiscal strategy. This is exactly why SF, AAA or whatever they call themselves here will never get into power
@John003: that would be good point except for the fact that every news channel carried every trump “speech” as breaking news and in full, thus giving him the equivalent of million of dollars in free advertising.
@Rui Firmino: The BBC is biased against anything which is anti-tory. Some really terrible reporting all though the election campaign giving maximum coverage to Theresa May’s one person campaign and little menrion of any other conservitive. The Chancellor of the Exchequer was never interviewed because everyone knows that his views are different to May’s.
Very unfair to the electorate having to choose leadership based on one single persons views. God help Britain for the coming Brexit negotiation if May is leading the charge.
@Simon: Pray tell, why would Corbyn be seen as ‘irresponsible’ towards budgeting if there wasn’t shameless bias in the press? Unlike Treeza’s chaotic and ever U-turning mess, Corbyn’s budget is actually costed.
@Tony Daly: I would disagree with much of what you say here. I would say with the availability of the internet there is far more actial information out there to help people form their opinions if they wish. There is much to admire about Jeremy Corbyn, but some of his views basically make it impossible for him ever to get elected in the UK. Most people can see he’s a decent guy, but he could never get elected in the UK. It will never happen.
@David Murphey: I actually think the turnout might be higher this time around. I would say that people seem disgruntled, but with the English it’s difficult to tell whether that’s a normal state of mind easily resolved by a cup of tea or whether it spurs more voters into action.
@Ben Coughlan: How long have you lived in the UK . People can still remember Blair and Brown . Why would anyone vote for Labour TAX and Spend . If Labour are the next goverment they may run thier five years but wont be elected again for a long time . They will make a mess of this country . None of Corybns spending plans is costed
Our closest neighbour and ally and just a stone-throw across the pond. Our biggest trading partner and country we share most cultural bonds with. Not to mind that we share a land border with them and both share a strong interest in the Northern part of this island.
Yea, why would Irish people have any interest in the makeup of the British Government?
USA is our biggest trading partner. If you want to stay up for foreign elections, i would suggest the French or German elections, given that we share a currency and economic union with them.
Not only our closest ally but also an economy which has a direct impact on our own. There is nothing wrong with not staying up to watch it but it a little scary how so many people can’t see how the election in the UK has a direct impact on us.
@Nick Allen: Actually by far our biggest trading patrner is the EU single market. Culturally its the USA as its their films, tv, music and employment that dominant.
@Fred Jensen: Yes, it has no effect on us who our neighbours put in charge of negotiating their withdrawal from our common union, the effective sundering of the Good Friday Agreement, the re-organisation of border arrangements in our own island or their nuclear arsenal. It’s no concern of ours!
A huge proportion of British people have some Irish ancestry and vice versa in Ireland. A portion of Ireland still remains part of the UK. We have strong ties of culture, history and economy.
@Fred Jensen: The journal are asking this question, Fred, because a substantial number of their readers might be A) based in NI B) Irish citizens living in Britain or C) British citizens living in the RoI. All of who would be elligible to vote in this election. But then you already knew this, didn’t you?
Absolutely, can’t wait but I’m a sad political junkie. Never been a more important election in the UK in terms of the affect it will have on Ireland. Expecting a Tory landslide but you never know.
Oh yeah just to see Labour getting slated
Like the sell out never again Labour few here
Who will never ever be elected by the people
Whom they betrayed
4 weeks ago the buzzfeed editor was on the Andrew Marr show, talking about internet stats and bloggers etc, hands down labour were well ahead engaging voters etc as they felt the mainstream media weren’t giving them a voice,Bernie sanders team are behind Corbin and driving policy May has been more than lagging behind, none of the front bench like hunt etc have been seen or come forward with views etc,Tory’s read this so so wrong, don’t be surprised to see a labour/coalition government,
I used to make a big night of watching UK elections, have friends around, beer & crisps, etc. but this time I won’t because (1) due to staff shortages I am needed at work all day tomorrow, and I dare not work a day while pooped (I did once and it did not end well), and (2) Although Labour has put up a magnificent fight, I have a feeling it won’t be enough to avert another crushing disappointment like I remember from 1992 and 2015.
I’ll be up and hoping that further progress is made in efforts finally destroy the cancer of partition.
After that we can begin to work on the partition of minds created by that same cancer.
Exit poll will be available at around 11 pm tonight.
Which is pretty accurate as people are asked which way they actually voted, not which way they are about to vote.
Corbyn is a clearly principled man. So they go after his ability to balance a budget. Yet the conservatives didn’t even cost their manifesto they didn’t think they needed to and knew if they did it would be held up later as yet more lies.
