Ulster Bank to open again this Sunday as Central Bank expresses concern

Some branches will stay open this weekend in an attempt to clear the payments backlog.

THE CENTRAL BANK has said this evening that it is concerned at continuing delays at Ulster Bank, calling the situation ‘unacceptable’.

It says that it has been in daily contact with Ulster Bank and its parent group RBS about the failure of its payment system and the impact on customers.

Yesterday Ulster Bank assured customers that full services would be restored by next Monday as it works to clear the backlog of payments which have built up over the past week.

Payments are now being received into accounts but the bank said that payments made between 20 and 25 June may be delayed.

Eighty branches of Ulster Bank are remaining open until 7pm this week in order to facilitate customer queries, while the opening hours of 60 Saturday opening branches are being extended from 10am to 3pm.

Twenty-two branches will open on Sunday from 10am to 1pm.

Yesterday 38,000 people made their way through Ulster Bank branches while 15,000 calls were handled through the call centre. Customers can call from 8am to 10pm on 1800 205 100.

The Deputy Governor of the Central Bank said he spoke with the CEO of RBS today and emphasised the importance of addressing the the delays.

The Central Bank is also working with the UK Financial Services Authority and the Bank of England in investigating the root cause.
