UPC rolls out new Horizon TV but existing users must pay for upgrade

The Samsung manufactured set top boxes will provide customers with their TV, broadband and home phone services in one unit.

A NUMBER OF months after customers began testing the new system, UPC Ireland have officially launched their new entertainment service, Horizon TV.

The Samsung manufactured set top box will provide customers with their TV, broadband and home phone services and allow them to view TV content on up two other devices within the home. The launch of Horizon follows UPC’s €500 million investment in its fibre powered network.

The service gives users access to 45 channels, 19 in HD, and comes with a number of features the company hopes will attract customers:

  • The ability to record four programmes at once while watching a fifth at the same time. The box comes with 400Gb of storage.
  • Access to TV streaming within the home on two devices plus your TV. Currently Horizon Apps are only available on Apple devices but the company plans to add Android applications later this year.
  • Suggestions for similar shows or series to watch based on a customer’s viewing habits.
  • Integrated Apps such as Twitter and Facebook so users can browse while watching TV.
  • 100Mb broadband as part of the bundle package.

The cost of the new service is €73 per month but several Twitter users have expressed confusion over the pricing structure and there have been complaints in relation to the connection charges for existing customers.

The service is available now to customers living in UPC’s high speed areas, estimated at 700,000 homes.

Very hard to pin something like this down. Manufacturing IED’s isn’t that hard, especially if you’ve got connections. Could be one person, could be multiple groups of people.

IED means Improvised Explosive Device equals something that can kill people. Very dangerous and it seems there are lots of them about.
