A US MAN has been arrested for allegedly plotting an attack on Congress inspired by Islamic State jihadists, according to the Justice Department and the FBI.
Christopher Cornell, 20, was taken into custody yesterday after he purchased two semi-automatic weapons and 600 rounds of ammunition in the US state of Ohio, according to a criminal complaint.
The Justice Department said he was charged “with attempting to kill officers and employees of the United States” and possession of a firearm to carry out violent acts.
According to the complaint, Cornell had opened a Twitter account under the pseudonym Raheel Mahrus Ubaydah, where he posted messages supporting Islamic State militants.
The Washington Post said he does not appear to have any formal backing from overseas.
Rather, according to an affidavit in support of the criminal complaint, he indicated that by conducting an attack he would be “fulfilling the directives” of violent jihadists.
He is accused of sending messages to an informant from the Federal Bureau of Investigations outlining his plans.
“I believe that we should just wage jihad under our own orders and plan attacks and everything,” he told the informant, according to the complaint.
Attacks
He also said he planned to launch several attacks and wanted to target US officials in Washington.
In autumn of last year an informant began cooperating with the FBI as a way to obtain favorable treatment in an unrelated criminal case and agreed to provide information about a person using the name Raheel Mahrus Ubaydah – Cornell’s alias on Twitter, the Post said.

“He considered the members of Congress as enemies and that he intended to conduct on attack on the US Capitol,” the complaint said.
According to the FBI document, he said he planned to “build, plant and detonate pipe bombs at and near the US Capitol, then use firearms to shoot and kill employees and officials.”
Cornell had been under surveillance by the FBI since August 2014.
This week, Cornell allegedly made final plans to go to Washington and set off bombs. Cornell purchased two semiautomatic rifles and about 600 rounds of ammunition in Ohio before he was arrested by FBI agents, according to the affidavit.

FBI
The arrest comes in the wake of deadly attacks in and around Paris last week by Islamist gunmen that killed 17 people.
The chairman of the House Committee on Homeland Security applauded the FBI for the arrest and said it was launching investigations the wider scourge of homegrown terrorism.
“These terrorists are intent on attacking our country and are attempting to convince Americans at home to radicalize, embrace their perverse world view and commit acts of violence,” head of the committee Michael McCaul said in a statement.
The Republican from Texas said the committee had launched two “full-blown investigations” to look at how the government is fighting domestic threats and how it is protecting itself against “gaps in our defenses in order to keep terrorists out of the United States.”
The Islamic State group, which controls large swathes of territory in Iraq and Syria, has called for Muslims around the world to kill citizens of countries fighting the group, including the United States.
It looks more like extended bum fluff than a beard.
Just like many of the other terrorists that have posed in front of cameras for Western main stream media fear mongering news reports. The wardrobe department certainly needs to improve itself.
The US should criminalise beards. The only people who have them are diddlers, terrorists and hipsters. That way they could arrest them before they do any harm.
I would argue with Rep. Michael McCaul that this issue is less to do with ISIS or “domestic terror threats” and more about gun control. Does the fact that, a clearly mentally unhinged individual was able to purchase 2 semi-automatic weapons and 600 rounds of ammo not worry him more?!
Anyone under surveillance either domestic or foreign needs to be questioned or detained. The situation is blighted with failure but prevention is better than the cure.
They didn’t allow this attack to happen because he looks too western and his name is not Ali, Kasim, Jahmir or Mohammad. Hold this guy for one of the mass shootings in a school, shopping mall etc.
Neil: Come on guys, I don’t think we should let this experience bring us down. After all, what’s so wrong with dirty clothes anyway?
Rick: Yeah! you know, what they say – dirty pants, clean botty.
Mike: Dirty duvet, dirty mind.
Vyvyan: Yeah – my knickers are so old, it’s only the stubborn understains that are holding them together.
Another radicalised young man.
Angry at:
Isreali oppression of his people? No.
Abject poverty, lack of education and opportunities in his Middle eastern country of origin?
No.
But there must be some reason, something in common with all those other young men. What could it be? Quite the puzzle for sure.
So if he was going to blow stuff up where is the materials fot the bomb? Nice of the fella to cooperate what was his crime and was there a back ground check done on this man was it illegal to buy the guns and that amount of ammo? So they arrested him on suspicion of going to carry out an attack not in the process is this the minority report or what everyone keep your thoughts to yourself or you could be next!
