US storms: Tornado kills 5 in Oklahoma

Five people, including two children, have been killed by a tornado that struck in Oklamhoma early this morning after warning signals failed to sound.

FIVE PEOPLE HAVE been killed and several others injured in Oklahoma, USA, after a series of tornadoes hit the Midwest and Plains early this morning.

Two children are among the dead; they were killed as they slept in a mobile home park after storms sirens failed to sound in the north-west Oklahoma town of Woodward. It is believed that lightning disabled the warning system in the city, reports the Guardian.

Meanwhile, two adults were also killed when a tornado struck just outside the Woodward border.

Details of the fifth death are not yet known, Keli Cain, spokeswoman for Oklahoma Emergency Management told the media.

According to the National Weather Service the storms hit Woodward at 00.18am.

Storms have also hit areas like Nebraska and Kansas, reports the Los Angeles Times, with severe weather warning still in place “from east Texas and Arkansas and up into the Great Lakes,” according to Bill Bunting, chief of operations at the Storm Prediction Centre.
