Motor Envy: The BMW i8 is an eco-friendly supercar that'll stop traffic

This futuristic scissor-doored work of art comes with a €94k price tag.

What’s this then?

This stunner of a car is the BMW i8 plug-in hybrid supercar. This particular 2016 BMW i8 can be yours for €94,950.

What’s so special about it?

This is the first plug-in hybrid vehicle manufactured by the BMW Group. It’s an environmentally friendly supercar, and there aren’t many of those around.

And as long as you have deep pockets to buy it in the first place, it is pretty affordable to keep and run – tax is €170 per annum and the combined fuel economy is said to be 2.1 litres/100km (134.5mpg).

Any standout design features?

The BMW i8 looks like a work of art. The exterior design pays close attention to aerodynamic properties. For example, the kidney grilles are almost completely closed off, the bonnet is low slung, and the underneath is sealed.

The car is designed for air to run through it as well as over it, hence the air ducts between the lights and deck lid and the lack of vents (well, apart from the very obvious one on the aluminum bonnet).

For me, the standout design feature of the BMW i8 is the scissor door system, though prepare for some trouble getting in and out of the low car.

And what powers this BMW i8?

At the front of the i8 is an electric motor, rated at 131hp. In the middle is a 1.5-litre, turbocharged three-cylinder petrol engine. There is no physical drive link between the two axles, meaning that the i8 can be front-, rear- or all-wheel drive, depending on what drive mode is selected.

Does the BMW i8 have any luxurious touches?

This particular example shimmers in its white metallic paint with BMW i Blue accents and sits on top of gorgeous 20-inch diamond cut alloy wheels.

Luxurious touches include heated leather seats, a black leather sports steering wheel with Satin Silver contrasting trim, and a Harman Kardon loudspeaker system.

But who would drive this car?

The BMW i8 is a plug-in hybrid that’ll make people stop and stare, so maybe this isn’t best suited to wallflowers. It would be perfect, however, for somebody who wants a technologically advanced car that looks like nothing else on the road but who also wants to keep the running costs low.
