Double Take: The VERY DARK CAVES sign from Father Ted

Mad Ted.

YOU DON’T HAVE to walk around Ireland too long before coming face to face with something straight out of Father Ted.

Case in point? The Ailwee Caves in Co Clare.

Fans of the 1990s sitcom will fondly recall the episode of Father Ted in which the gang depart Craggy Island and embark on an adventure of sorts to the mainland. While on the mainland, Ted and Dougal decide to visit some caves known as the Very Dark Caves and have a disastrous encounter with Richard Wilson from One Foot in the Grave.

It’s a classic episode.

The episode was filmed at Ailwee Caves in Ballyvaughan, Co. Clare.

And just look what stands outside the cave…

Yes, it’s the sign from Father Ted! In fairness, “It’s almost like being blind” is a pretty good slogan.

The sign is now basically a tourist destination in its own right with Tedheads flocking to take their picture alongside it.

And who could blame them, really?
