Queues for ATMs this evening in Dublin Nicky Ryan/TheJournal.ie

Poll: Do you carry cash or do you always use card?

Problems processing transactions for Visa cards is affecting many across the country this evening.

MANY A BANK holiday weekend started off unexpectedly for a lot of people, with problems with Visa processing payment transactions meaning many are unable to use their cards this evening.

Irish banks AIB, Permanent TSB and Bank of Ireland have all said some customers here are being affected by the issues.

Permanent TSB, for example, said that customers’ Visa debit cards can be used at ATMs but may not work in shops or restaurants.

So, for some people who didn’t have already have cash on them this evening, they may be unable to pay for goods and services at all if card is their only option.

With that in mind, this evening we’re asking you: Do you carry cash?

Poll Results:

All the time (4683)
Sometimes (2874)
Rarely (2823)
I always use card (1900)

The Vikings (or Ox-men) brought cash to Ireland. They used to carry their coins in their armpits secured with bees wax. Hence the term “under your oxter”.

@Dan Mullins: Only have the card a month. Card cost €6 and to date I have spent at retail (shops, pubs and restaurants) €2,000 and no charges. Did use it for cash at ATM and there was a Irish Government Stamp charge of €0.12c I think the charge you are referring to is cash withdrawals. There is a limit on the FREE account.
