Vladimir Putin says Russia's army can't be stopped

The comments come as the fragile ceasefire in Ukraine looks to be crumbling.

RUSSIA’S PRESIDENT VLADIMIR Putin has said that his country’s military is unstoppable.

Interfax quotes Putin as making the remark in the buildup to next week’s Defenders of the Fatherland Day.

“No one should have the illusion that they can gain military superiority over Russia, put any kind of pressure on it.

“We will always have an adequate answer for any such adventures.”

He said that the country’s soldiers had proven themselves.

Russia currently has 835,000 active personnel and 2 million reservists.

Our soldiers and officers have proven that they are ready to act decisively smoothly, professionally and courageously, to perform the most difficult non-standard tasks, as befits a modern hardened combat-ready army that protects their traditions and military duty.

The comments come as the fragile ceasefire in Ukraine looks to be crumbling.

“The ceasefire has been violated several times,” French President Francois Hollande said in a joint Paris media conference with German Chancellor Angela Merkel.

The EU, US and Ukraine accuse Russia of being behind the hostilities. Moscow denies directly supporting the rebels.

While Merkel and Hollande met, pro-Russian rebels were taking victorious photos of each other in the east Ukrainian town of Debaltseve, a strategic transport hub they overran this week despite the ceasefire coming into force last Sunday.

The town was a graveyard of burnt-out Ukrainian army vehicles, craters and shattered buildings, AFP reports.

The battle for the town had involved non-stop shelling before the rebels stormed it for street-to-street fighting.

With reporting from AFP

Paul I doubt that Yeltsin even knew he existed being constantly blotto. Putin was a third rate KGB clerk in East Germany. After the fall of the Soviet Union he got a minor clerical job in the St Petersburg city council. Was under investigation into criminal activities regarding misappropriation of council funds. Before criminal charges were brought he is whisked off to Moscow and is given a job inthe Yeltsin government then appointed head of the FSB (now remember he was a literal nobody in the KGB) and from there “Elected” president. Then as president cracks down only on certain Oligarchs (Any that opposed him or had the potential to oppose him) but yet claims to crack down on corruption and graft

@Mick Jordan. I was there when Yeltsin stepped down and Putin took over. And you’re right, many people in Moscow scratched their heads and asked who Putin was. but if, as you stated, Putin was an absolute nobody, how come oligarchs were against him? But as I’ve said before, Putin was originally welcomed as a force to clean up the noxious society that had developed under the Yeltsin regime.

Ann Marie. How did (what his own KGB commander described as a mediocre Officer) go from a minor clerk in St Petersburg under criminal investigation to the Head of the FSB in only a couple of years?
    Who was looking after him?
It had to be someone with enough juice to quash the criminal investigation and get him a Job in the government in Moscow and then promoted over everyone’s heads to the top man in the FSB.

What this boils down to is Russian expansion, are the West prepared to do anything about it? NATO member states believe that article 5 of their charter “an attack on one is an attack on all” will suffice to protect them. Not everyone is so sure, and the Ukraine is not a member of NATO so, effectively, are on their own. There is no cavalry coming to their rescue.
Putin has shown a complete disregard for any talks and ceasefires, throughout this entire process, he has almost laughed at the entire European delegates attempts to stop his armies, to the point of denying they are even in the Ukraine. He first took the Crimea, he will now take Eastern Ukraine followed by the rest of the country, and it’s not just with traditional military force. He has used bribery and blackmail to coerce local politicians first, he made sure FSB agents distributed Russian passports to the ethnic Russian population long before any of this happened. They also began to stir up that population, financed by Moscow. This is now beginning to happen in other Baltic countries like Latvia and Lithuania who have a 20% ethnic Russian population, they have every reason to be very worried.
The big question is if Russia should do the same thing with one of these countries, a NATO member, invade under the pretext of protecting their native Russian population, what would NATO do? Would they come to the aid of member state, they’re supposed to, but many believe and Putin is gambling that there just isn’t the stomach for a war with Russia. We’ll find out soon enough. The problem is, if Putting takes the Baltic states will he stop at that, will he want Poland too, what about Finland, where will he stop. Will he stop?

It’s all a show of strength to mask the weaknesses of their wider economy and social problems of ordinary Russians in many parts of that massive nation. They did the same thing for decades during the Cold War and in the latter end it was all words to hide the fact that millions of people were starving from the poverty Communism created.

I am not saying don’t take them seriously. I am just saying they are squeezing us because they feel squeezed themselves having backed themselves into a corner of their making.

John the ones with links to the North Koreans, as well as Putins ex comrades in the KGB, are actually in government now. Have a little google of Pat Rabitte, Eamon Gilmore and the rest of the DL rump to enlighten yourself. The British were supporters of Pol Pot, Pinochet, Mubarak & King Abdullah, amongst others, when the IRA were fighting them, while the PIRA just took weapons from the Libyans, as any paramilitary group would do.

You are an absolute weirdo, doesn’t matter what the topic is but you and the other oddballs Carey, and Gilfool will be here going on rants about SF, nearly as bad as the clown Frazier up north. A conflict between NATO and Russia wouldn’t necessarily lead to the use of nuclear weapons. In order to halt a Russian advance, the deployment of thermobaric bombs would do the trick.

Why is it never ever mentioned that the ethnic Russians living in the Baltic states are treated dismally, they are not allowed to vote or hold certain jobs and this has been going on since those countries joined the EU. This issue needs to be addressed as it’s totally unacceptable even illegal in Europe to discriminate against minorities. Somehow this doesn’t apply to ethnic Russian in Baltic states. WHY?
