THE PEOPLE OF Waterford will not be told what to do, you hear?

And in that spirit, they’re organising an event to rail against a decision by Waterford City and County Council to ban swearing in public parks.

Not just swearing though; smoking, picking flowers, flying model aeroplanes, BBQs are all out the window too.

Enter the Waterford BBQ, Smoking, Skating, Flowerpicking, Model Aeroplane Flying and Cursing Fest 2015.

The event, organised by Facebook user ForeverDole, is due to take place on 1 August in the city’s People’s Park, and 1300 people have already said they’re attending. With that much committment, it simply has to happen.

Those planning to attend are invited to bring

Yourself, including all your barbeque, smoking, skating, flower picking, model aeroplane flying and cursing paraphernalia.

Remember to clean up after yourself and most important of all, have a good time in our beautiful public park.

The move by councillors on the bye laws has been met with a degree of derision and disbelief, with some wondering what constitutes swearing, and others being humorously facetious about other aspects of the new laws.

DailyEdge.ie has attempted to get to the bottom of the swearing question, hearing from Sinn Féin councillor Pat Fitzgerald that he believes the law will only be applied in an “antisocial or threatening context” while a spokesperson for Waterford City and County Council has confirmed that there is no “list of all banned swear words” but that the law applies to “obscene and profane language that would cause offence of distress or be inappropriate in its use”.

We have reached out to the Waterford BBQ, Smoking, Skating, Flowerpicking, Model Aeroplane Flying and Cursing Fest 2015 to ascertain if the event will actually be going ahead on 1 August.
