6 breath-taking underwater explorations

A glimpse at a little-seen world.

THERE’S SOMETHING TRULY fascinating about photographs taken under the sea or down below the surface of any water.

Perhaps it’s because it’s somewhere we can’t easily see ourselves, or the suggestion of an unexplored world down there that we don’t fully understand. Either way, the resulting photographs can be truly breath-taking.

1. Sue Austin’s wheelchair photography

British artist Sue Austin and a group of divers created a self-propelled underwater wheelchair for her to use – which can “fly” through water, giving her untold freedom to move.

2. The engines of the Titanic

Of course, we all remember the beginning of the blockbuster – videos from accomplished diver and director James Cameron plumbing the depths to unearth the unsinkable ship’s ruin. The ship sank in 1912 and the engines, below, are now covered in “rusticles” – orange stalactites created by iron-eating bacteria.

3. What a gun looks like shot underwater

Eerie. The physics of the gun firing is shown much more vividly by the movement of water – the shock of the release and reverberations made visible.

4. The city of Heracleion

This Greek city was trapped underwater over a millennium ago. French marine archaeologist Franck Goddio stumbled on some relics while looking for a wreck of Napoleon’s warships that led to finding this ancient city and its treasures.

6. And finally…

An easy one to recreate yourself. Get a waterproof camera. Hold underwater. Throw a ball for your dog to fetch. Capture their expression. The results? Adorable.
