IT MAY BE the first day of spring* – but we can still expect a fair deal of wintry weather later.

According to Met Éireann:

Rain will spread northeastwards this afternoon, turning heavy in places with local spot flooding possible.

It will becoming very windy later in parts of Munster and south Leinster, with severe winds in coastal fringes.

Wintry showers are also possible, especially towards the evening.

A ‘yellow alert’ weather warning comes into effect at 2pm this afternoon, lasting until 6am tomorrow.

It covers Munster, Wexford and Galway and advises people in the area to expect winds reaching mean speeds of 50 to 65km with gusts of 90 to 110km.

There’ll be rain, sleet and snow in some areas overnight, clearing later, with temperatures between zero and three degrees.

Tomorrow, showers or longer spells of rain will spread from the Atlantic, with a risk of spot flooding in places.

More showers of sleet, and even snow, can be expected on Friday night, and it will continue cold on Saturday with frost and icy patches possible overnight.
