6 weekend events for tweens and under-12s... from musicals to midnight walks

Darkness Into Light takes place this weekend, and there’s plenty more on besides.

NATIONWIDE:

Darkness Into Light: This Saturday, over 180,000 people will walk five kilometres at sunrise to to promote suicide prevention and to tackle the stigma that leads people to the doors of Pieta House centres. Under 18s are welcome with adult supervision.

DUBLIN

Pond exploration at the Botanic Gardens: Learn all about the mini-beasts that live in and around the pond at the National Botanic Gardens this Saturday, with expert tips on how to perfect your catch and release technique and identify the amazing creatures you find.

Birdwatching workshops: The Discovery Zone at the National History Museum is hosting a hands-on session with Birdwatch Ireland this Saturday, where families can learn all about the dawn chorus and why it’s such an important time of year for all of our native birds.

Choose your next summer camp: With summer holidays looming, grab the kids and head to the Royal Marine Hotel in Dun Laoghaire, where they are hosting a Summer Camp Fair this Sunday. Kids can choose what they like and you can book them in, there and then.

Grease The Musical: The Brian Brady Youth Theatre is staging their version of Grease this weekend at Moat Theatre and it is going to be fantastic. There’s a matinee on Saturday as well as the main evening show, so take the whole family.

Acoustic Yard Festival: With lots to check out for the whole family, Westport will be buzzing this weekend as the third Acoustic Yard Festival rolls into town. There will be a busking competition on Saturday afternoon, as well as afternoon concerts on the town’s main stage on Saturday and Sunday, making it an ideal spot for music-loving families.
