5 Westworld mysteries that gripped us in season one

What was at the centre of The Maze – and how did Arnold meet his end?

AFTER A WAIT of over a year, Westworld’s second season is finally here, and available to watch on Sky Atlantic.

The show, which tells the story of a futuristic theme park managed by artificially intelligent ‘hosts’, came to a dramatic first-season ending back in December 2016 (and if you haven’t seen that far yet, prepare for a few spoilers ahead).

Thanks to the 2am simulcast with the USA on Sky Atlantic earlier this morning, some Irish night owls will have already seen the season two premiere – even at the expense of a night’s sleep. Violent delights, violent ends, right?

To get you in the mood for season two, here’s a look back at some of the plot twists and turns that grabbed fans during the show’s first season…

1. What was at the centre of The Maze?

The Maze is the standout example of Westworld’s screenwriters playing the long game. There were countless cryptic references to ‘the maze’ during season one, and while we were never quite sure what it was, we knew it was pretty damn important to The Man In Black.

Thankfully, we were finally given some answers in the show’s finale, in a reveal which set Dolores up as a key player for season two. And speaking of Dolores…

2. Why did Dolores have so many glitches?

Anytime Dolores was around, it seemed like we could barely make it through one camera pan without someone appearing out of nowhere, or objects mysteriously changing places. Remember Lawrence’s creepy daughter showing up in her fancy dress? Yeah, that.

As a key connection between the old Westworld and the new, Dolores often seemed to be existing in two parallel universes, making things very confusing for viewers.

3. Who was the Man In Black?

As another season-long mystery that wasn’t solved until the finale, the origin story of the Man In Black was the subject of many a fan theory. From the moment we met the black-hatted and terrifying Ed Harris in season one, we knew he was bad news.

But where did he come from, what did he want – and most importantly, who was he before all of this began? William, we’re looking at you.

4. Whose side was Ford on, anyway?

All throughout season one, Ford’s motivations seemed unclear. On the one hand, as the park’s co-creator, Ford was involved in some fairly sinister goings-on (sure, didn’t he possibly murder his own business partner)?

On the other, at times it seemed like he was trying to do some good by the hosts and atone for his past mistakes. In the season finale, we finally got some clarity, in a reveal that set up some pretty intense plot points for season two,

5. What happened to Arnold?

We knew from early on that Ford was once one half of a creative duo along with Arnold Weber, and that the two worked together to bring the Westworld concept to life. What we didn’t know for much of season one was why Arnold was no longer around.

Many thought he could have been murdered by Ford, but Ford himself spoke of Arnold’s death as an accident. Once the link between Arnold and Ford’s close collaborator Bernard was revealed, the story finally began to unravel.

Most of these mysteries were resolved during season one, but in true Westworld style, a few threads were left dangling for fans, making the prospect of tonight’s new episode all the more tantalising.

The brand new season of Westworld is available to watch now, with a new episode every Monday, exclusively on Sky Atlantic.
