Daniel Craig and Benicio Del Toro are in this White House video on ending sexual assault

Seth Meyers, Steve Carrell and Dulé Hill all appear in the video.

DANIEL CRAIG AND a number of other celebrities have appeared in an all-male White House video talking about the need to stop sexual assaults.

The 60-second public service announcement entitled “1 is 2 many”  is part of a major campaign by the Obama administration on reducing violence against women.

The White House / YouTube

Benicio Del Toro, Seth Meyers, Steve Carrell and Dulé Hill all appear in the video, along with Barack Obama and Vice President Joe Biden.

Young women still face the highest rates of sexual assault and violence in the US, with an estimated 1 in 5 women  victims of sexual assault while they are in college. The issue of sexual assault against women aged 16-24 has been under sustained focus in recent months.

In the video, Biden says “If I saw it happening, I was taught that you have to do something about it”.

The video has almost one quarter of a million views in its first 24 hours.

What do you think of the video? Would something like this have an impact in Ireland?

I think the point is to make us all aware of the prevalence of sexual assault and it’s pathetic that there’s so much denial and attempts to demonise victims.

I know that people will say that a video by some politicans and movies will not stop sexual assault will not stop the attackers but thats not the point here. The point as far as I can see is to change the perseption that its the victims fault for inviting it on themselves and to make it socially unacceptable to even make the connection between , say how person is dressed , and weather anybody should be allowed to touch them in a sexual way without their consent.

I use the word ‘ person’ here as it is important to note that anybody can be a victim.

I think the music industry also has a big part to play. There is many a music video glamourising and sexualising women as objects. Wearing provocative clothing and dancing in very inviting ways. As an example one need look no further than videos starring artists such as Rihanna, Beyoncé, Katy Perry, Madonna, Miley Cyrus to name just afew. Its not the artist but the producers who are creating the videos to whom im referring. The lyrics of many of pop songs also tend to include many sexual connotations and again keeping a listeners thoughts whether consciously or subliminally on the subject of loose sex being ok.

There’s no excuse for sexual assault, blaming music videos is seriously clutching at straws. How about we blame the perpetrators?

I don’t think there is any one reason for any one person to sexually assault another. The reasons that have been given by psychologists, criminologists etc. Differ depending on what way they are leaning their reports towards. The general consensus is that it’s to do with power but others say it’s to do with learned behaviours and others to the abusers inability to put the rights and well being of the other person over their need to be gratified. it could be all of those, it could be none, but it most definitely is not the victims fault.. what a person wears, how provocative they look, as children how grown up they seem, as partners how much a person thinks they need to be led and dominated are all just excuses that an abuser will use to vindicate their actions, but they are not actual reasons.

Have respect for the victims…A serious and important message is being sent… stop making it a gender issue or mocking people involved in the campaign. Listen to the message…. that is all.

And campaign on this that’s sex-specific can f*ck off. Male victims have enough stigma to deal with without some unqualified actors being fed lines that re-enforce the idea that only women suffer in this way

I actually think it is to get the bystander involved if they think something is happening and not just stand by, not actually targeting the rapists.

According to the subtitles it seems the White House have confused Benicio Del Toro with the well known movie star “Male Speaker”. #subtitlefail
