Woman in her 70s airlifted to hospital following two-vehicle collision in Co Cavan

The collision occurred at around 1.19pm this afternoon.

A WOMAN IN her 70s has been airlifted to hospital following a two-vehicle collision in Co Cavan this afternoon.

The collision occurred at Lisgrey, Virginia, Co Cavan at around 1.10pm.

The woman in her 70s, who was a passenger of one of the cars, was brought by air ambulance to the Mater Hospital in Dublin with life-threatening injuries.

She remains in hospital in a critical condition.

The occupant of the second car was hospitalised with non-life-threatening injuries.

Gardaí are appealing to anyone who may have witnessed this collision to come forward.

Road users travelling on the N3 between The Lavey Inn and Virginia between 12.45pm and 1.15pm this afternoon and who may have camera footage, including dashcam recordings, are asked to make it available to gardaí.

Anyone with any information is asked to contact Cavan Garda Station on 049 436 8800, the Garda Confidential Line on 1800 666 111, or any Garda station.

The road will remain closed overnight and the scene has been preserved pending a technical examination by Garda Forensic Collision Investigators.

The following diversions are in place following the collision:

  • Southbound: Divert at Lavey to Bailieborough via R165 then to Virginia via R178
  • Northbound: Divert at Virginia to Ballyjamesduff via R194 then to N3 at New Inn via R196
