Man charged after woman dies in hospital following serious two-vehicle collision in Co Donegal

The woman has been named locally as Elizabeth Cave from Donegal Town.

LAST UPDATE | 28 Aug

A MAN HAS been charged after the death of a woman who was badly injured in a two-car collision in Co Donegal at the weekend.

The woman, who was in her 80s, was one of three people injured in the crash at Inver in the south of the county on Sunday morning at 9am.

The crash came just hours after another serious accident on the Inishowen Peninsula which claimed the lives of two young cousins.

The woman has been named locally as Elizabeth Cave from Donegal Town. Her family announced her death on the social media page of the family business Cavern Design.

It reads: “Our beloved mother, Elizabeth Cave, has passed away following injuries sustained in a tragic accident at Inver last Sunday.”

Two other people in the collision, a man in his 50s and a woman in her 40s, were taken to Letterkenny University Hospital for treatment of their injuries which are believed to be non life-threatening.

Elizabeth, who had serious injuries, was taken to Sligo University Hospital following the collision on the N56.

Gardaí are still appealing for witnesses and are asking any road users who were in the area between 8.30am and 9.30am to make contact. Anyone with any other information is asked to contact Ballyshannon Garda Station on 071 9858530, the Garda Confidential Line on 1800 666 111, or any Garda Station.

The death brings to 11 the number of people who have been killed on Donegal’s roads so far this year, one more than for all of last year.

The funeral takes place tomorrow of Kian Dawson, a 16 year old teenager who died in the crash at Quigley’s Point on Saturday night last. His cousin Eoghan Dawson, 20, passed away yesterday at the Royal Victoria Hospital in Belfast as a result of his injuries.

The chief of the Garda Traffic Corps in Donegal, Inspector Seamus McGonigle, has pleaded with motorists to be vigilant at all times.
