Police say fire in which woman’s body was found was not suspicious

The fire took place at a house in the Georges Lane area of Newry on Saturday night.

Updated 8.50pm

THE POLICE IN Northern Ireland have said that a fire in which a woman died was a tragic acccident.

Initially, it had been suspected that the fire was suspicious.

Police remain at the scene of the fatal fire, which occurred in the Georges Lane area of Newry.

They said this evening that the investigation is ongoing but foul play is no longer suspected and there is no evidence to suggest at this stage that the death was anything other than a tragic accident.

The victim is not from the local area and police are liaising with her family in England.

Officers are keen to speak to two men who were in the Mill Street/Georges Lane area on Saturday night at around 11pm, who observed the fire and raised the alarm.

They are asking these men to contact detectives in Newry on 0845 600 8000. Police would also appeal to anyone who was in the area around this time to contact them on the same number.

Suspicious fire

Earlier today, police said the woman who died in the fire had been formally identified as a 38-year-old female who is originally from the Birmingham area of England.

The house fire was reported to the police just after 11.05pm on Saturday night.

A post mortem was due to take place today.
