Woman killed in suspected nightclub crush

Police are investigating the events which led up to the fatal injuries. Two other women are being treated for critical injuries sustained in the incident.

ONE WOMAN HAS died and two others are critically injured after being crushed in a stampede at a nightclub in Northampton, England early this morning.

Police were called to the Lava & Ignite club in the town at around midnight. It is understood that fire services were called to the scene a few hours later.

The injured women were taken to Northampton General Hospital.

In a statement today, local police said “the fatal and critical injuries are all thought to be the result of crushing”, but an investigation into the events which led to the injuries is underway.

A technical examination is being carried out at the scene today and police say they are part of a multi-agency investigation into the incident.

An event called DNA Presents Wickedest Wickedest was being held at the venue last night from 9pm and was due to end at 4am. One witness told the BBC that a fire alarm went off at the club as the event was drawing to a close, sparking panic among the patrons.

The Northampton Chronicle reports that the woman who died from her injuries has been identified locally as a 22-year-old university student.

The club is not due to open today or tomorrow, according to the events diary on its website.
