A woman will choose between two husbands for an Irish radio competition

The potentially explosive social experiment will be running until June 16th.

OVER THE COURSE of the next month, regional radio station iRadio is running a social experiment to find two people to get married – without having met each other.

The project is called ‘Three Strangers and a Wedding’ and will feature a bride on her wedding day picking between two grooms – and the catch is that she will only have spoken to them over the phone whilst on air.

iRadio iRadio

Speaking to DailyEdge.ie about the project, Sandra Kissane of iRadio explained what is actually going to happen:

Three strangers – the bride and two final grooms – will meet for the first time at the alter on June 16th. She will then choose one of the two and get married to them on the day.

The people involved will be complete strangers, with their only contact coming through regular phone chats live on air and “blind” dates in person in the iRadio studio. The bride will choose who she wants to get married to based on these chats, as Kissane explains:

There will be five potential grooms on air. Then she will get to decide to go forward with two of them for the big day

iRadio iRadio

But, wait. What are the actual chances that the the people will like the look of each other, never mind get on well in person?

This is the crux of the experiment. She will obviously get on that little but better with one, but on the day she will come up the aisle never having met them. When she finally gets to see them, will the person she got on better with win out?

At this stage, we were just curious as to how it will all play out on the day. Surely there is a chance that the bride or the grooms will just not go through with it?

Anything can happen with this. Of course, nobody is forced to do anything and there is no hidden agenda. If they feel it is too much, they can absolutely change their mind on the day.

Where iRadio broadcasts in Ireland iRadio iRadio

The process is ongoing, with the first potential bride on air on tomorrow morning’s breakfast show:

We met up with a lot of people and have narrowed it down to five brides so far. Then over the next week the listeners will bring that down to one bride who will go forward. We wanted there to be brides who are in it for the right reasons, they believe that love is blind, and for it to work out

The idea behind the experiment is that a couple can get to know each other without the pressures of looks or any other distractions. Kissane says that the amount of people who have entered the project has been “shocking” and that they are nearly complete with the interviewing process for the grooms.

The wedding – or perhaps non-event, if things don’t go well – on June 16th will be broadcast live on the station and streamed on its website. Both the bride’s family and the two groom’s families will be in attendance before and after the big decision is made.

No pressure, then.

Simple: turn off the TV at mealtimes or eat in the kitchen and not the sitting room.

No tv, no wifi, no mobile devices – for a start. Everybody eats the same meal, nobody leaves the table until we’re finished. If we’re finished early then we talk to one another. Even if we all don’t make it to the table at the same time (if someone is working) then everybody else still eats together. It is that simple.

We always always eat together unless someone is working…never made special meals for anyone (surprising how people came to like previous dislikes!)…no telly…oh and no telly in bedrooms either!

Looks liked I would have had malnutrition in your house.

I’m lucky my mother did me separate meals.

*my mother had malnutrition growing up due to being a picky eater.

My 6 and 3 year olds usually compete with each other when setting the plates and cutlery…I hope they continue to do so into their teen years.

We always share 1 childhood experience (good or bad) of our own with kids at dinner time and wait for everyone to finish before getting up.

I tell them to sit down, shut up, and eat this crap. If they are hungry enough, following physical activity, there is no problem whatever. Articles like this annoy me.

Once a week is enough for us for sit down family meal. The kids are generally hungry straight after school. The husband can finish work any time between 5 and 7.

Everyone in the house has their own tastes so sometimes I cook 3 different meals at the same time. My husband can’t eat red meat or anything with cream, my one son doesn’t like things spicy (like me), my one son also turned vegetarian for a while (that phase is over), my one son and daughter are the only people in the family who like fish and prawns.

So meal times are organised chaos.

As a picky eater as a child I didn’t agree with forcing a child to eat a food they don’t like. I am very happy to feed them what I know they will eat be it a stir fry, roast, curry, pasta and so on.

I grew up in a ‘eat when you are hungry’ house. No set in stone mealtimes. It was more of a relaxed environment that way. Dad often worked till late at night on a car engine (he wouldn’t leave it till it was fixed) and would have his dinner reheated in the microwave.

I have been to extended family sit down meals and they are awkward. Expectations for kids to clean their plates, bribery with desserts, no elbows on table, kids getting bored, parents getting irritated. More hassle than its worth sometimes. ..

Hunger is a great sauce. There weren’t too many picky eaters when food was scarce. I understand some people have aversions to certain foods but with kids sometimes give them an inch and they’ll take a mile. They eat what’s for the dinner in our house and if they don’t like certain things in it e.g. Mushrooms, they can pick them out. A little bit of everything.
