Man (22) killed while working at SmartPly plant in Waterford

The incident happened at the SmartPly plant, a subsidiary of Coillte, at around 3pm yesterday.

A YOUNG MAN was killed yesterday afternoon in an industrial accident at a wood processing plant in Co Waterford.

The incident happened at the SmartPly plant, a subsidiary of Coillte, at Belview Port, Slieverue at around 3pm.

The 22-year-old, who gardaí have not yet named, was from Thomastown, Co Kilkenny.

Although the Health and Safety Authority would not say what happened to the man, it is believed the accident involved a crane.

His body was taken to Waterford Regional Hospital where a full post-mortem was carried out.

The HSA, the gardaí and the plant are investigating.
