Here's why wrestling is trending in Ireland today

Woah-oh, woah-oh WRESTLEMANIA!

Dean

IF YOU LOG on to Twitter today, you will notice that six of the 10 trending topics are to do with Ireland’s 1-1 draw with Poland.

Not too unusual in the wake of a competitive international football match.

However, the other four topics (Wrestlemania, Rollins, The Rock and Triple H) in the top 10 are all to do with wrestling.

If you aren’t in the sports entertainment loop, last night was Wrestlemania 31, where 76,000 people packed into Levi’s Stadium in Santa Clara, California, not far from San Francisco. Fans from across the world paid a combined $12.6 million for tickets, making it the highest-grossing wrestling event in World Wrestling Entertainment (WWE) history.

Across Ireland, hardy fans stayed up from midnight until after 3am to watch the wrestling world’s equivalent to the SuperBowl.

In Dublin’s Woolshed bar, 600 people packed the place out to watch the event unfold. And yes, all of them know it’s not real.

Here’s why the event captured the imagination:

Triple H’s mates Degeneration X came out.

But then, so did Sting’s former colleagues (and nemeses, but ignore that) the NWO, including Hulk Hogan and one of the guys from Magic Mike.

In the end, Triple H won.

Then, four women, three of whom star on WWE’s reality show Total Divas had a match.

Bellas

AJ Lee and English wrestler Paige won, beating the evil Bella Twins.

A bad Russian called Rusev brought a tank to the ring.

But he wasn’t a match for WWE and America’s golden boy, John Cena.

Then, The Rock showed up and talked smack to Triple H, who had showered and got into a suit.

He then unloaded on his former nemesis, with a little help from UFC women’s champion Ronda Rousey.

The Undertaker made his comeback aged 50 and beat a creepy witch doctor named Bray Wyatt.

Taker

In the main event, former UFC Heavyweight champion and defending WWE World Heavyweight champion Brock Lesnar took on The Rock’s cousin Roman Reigns.

For a fake fight, it was pretty vicious.

But Rollins, who was entitled to a title match whenever he wanted, came down and put himself in the match, getting the win and the belt.
