Rural areas worst affected as 4,000 homes still without power after Storm Darragh

The ESB said that restoration efforts have become protracted as some lines taking hours to repair only serve one or two homes.

AROUND 4,000 HOMES are still without power after Storm Darragh, with rural areas worst affected.

That’s down from 8,000 yesterday, as the ESB makes progress on its goal to restore power to everyone by Saturday.

Around 375,000 homes were impacted by the storm, which is said to have been the most destructive one since Ophelia in 2017.

A spokesperson for the ESB said that restoration efforts have become protracted as some lines taking hours to repair only serve one or two homes.

These small clusters are almost exclusively in rural areas, including Carrick-on-Shannon and the wider south-west Leitrim area, north Roscommon, Arklow and south-west Wicklow, and County Offaly.

Around 3,000 ESB personnel and contractors have been consistently working to fix faults nationwide. They are aided by a crew of 60 from their French counterpart Enedis, who have been ferried in to bolster restoration efforts in the north Roscommon area.

Another 40 workers from Northern ireland Electricity Networks are also helping.

The ESB says it will likely have power restored to all homes affected by the Storm by the end of the week.

Eir has said that less than 1% of mobile network sites are offline, down from a peak of 15% last Saturday, 7 December.

Over 82,500 broadband faults have been repaired.

However, the company says it can’t currently provide a clear estimate of when broadband will be restored to all customers.

“It will take several days to fully assess the situation.”

@Jack Hayes: Why do the left let themselves down all the time by insulting people because they disagree with them. That is why trump is in power. Resorting to insults will never win an argument. Calm down.

@Joseph Prior: So what, it’s better to have trees and the power going with the odd storm than cutting down all the trees near power lines. Not all trees are planted by people.

@Ger Whelan: I how you kept that email safe. My experience with Vodafone is that what they tell you today they’ll do to you tomorrow…. Worst company I’ve ever had the misfortune to be with. And I have to stay with them because they’ve got the best broadband deal going, and they know it so they generally treat you like something they’ve scraped off their shoes….

Don’t know why our cables aren’t underground like other countries seem to be. We’re at the mercy of the Atlantic in this country. We need investment in underground cabling not more poles and tree cutting

Article 18 of the draft amendment linked to in the Journal’s fact checking WHO article literally says that the WHO can recommend to States Parties the following advice; “require vaccinations”, “require medical examination”, “implement isolation and treatment”, “refuse entry of suspect and affected persons”, “implement restrictions on persons from affected areas”. This is not even an amendment but is already contained in the Regulations. However, I am aware it just says the WHO is “non-binding advice”, so in that case I would highlight how China effectively bullied the West and the WHO into its pandemic responses through economic might, so I would question the bona fides of the WHO.
