THE UNITED STATES warned France about the ringleader of last week’s terrorist attacks several months ago.
US intelligence published a report showing it warned in May that Islamic State (IS) was capable of carrying out the kind of large-scale, coordinated attacks seen in Paris.
The assessment from the Office of Intelligence and Analysis, in coordination with the FBI, specifically refers to Abdelhamid Abaaoud, describing him as a ringleader of Belgian plotters, and warned that Europe was more at risk of attack than the US.
A plot uncovered by Belgian authorities in January “may indicate that the (IS) group has developed the capability to launch more complex operations in the West,” it said.
Abaaoud is a 28-year-old IS fighter who was previously thought to be in Syria after fleeing raids in his native Belgium earlier this year.
Residents of the Paris suburb of Saint-Denis said they had been caught in a terrifying exchange of fire at dawn yesterday as police closed in on the apartment where he was thought to be hiding.
Hayat (26) who only gave one name, had been leaving a friend’s apartment where she had spent the night when the shots erupted.
“I heard gunfire,” she said. “I could have been hit by a bullet. I never thought terrorists could have hidden here.”
A man arrested during the assault told AFP he had allowed his apartment to be used by two people from Belgium.
“A friend asked me to put up two of his friends for a few days,” Jawad Bendaoud said, before he was arrested.

The fate of Abaaoud, the suspected ‘mastermind’ of the Paris attacks, is still unknown after a huge police raid left at least two people dead yesterday.
Police staged a ferocious seven-hour assault in the north of Paris yesterday after intelligence led investigators to an apartment where the Belgian suspected of orchestrating the worst ever militant attack on French soil was thought to be hiding.
At least two people were killed in the raid — a woman thought to have blown herself up with a suicide vest and another body that was found riddled with bullets — according to Paris prosecutor Francois Molins.
The suspects were set to carry out a second attack targeting Charles de Gaulle airport and the city’s financial district La Defense, according to reports.
Eight people were arrested, but neither Abaaoud nor 26-year-old Salah Abdeslam — suspected of taking part with his suicide-bomber brother Brahim in the attacks last Friday that killed 129 people — were among those held.
French lawmakers will today begin debating whether to extend the state of emergency declared after last week’s attacks by three months to February, and expand it to allow suspects to be placed under house arrest.
Molins said the raid had thwarted a “team of terrorists that… could have struck”.
Police used more than 5,000 rounds of ammunition in the raid after terrified residents living in the area near the Stade de France stadium were evacuated.
A series of explosions rang out as the police closed in on the dwelling and one suspect was seen being dragged away.
Severe damage to the building and the state of the bodies found inside made it impossible to know exactly how many people had been killed and who they were, the prosecutor said.
“I am not able to give you a precise number and identity of those killed. There are at least two dead and verifications will likely take longer than expected,” Molins added.
“A new team of terrorists was neutralised and all indications are that given their arms, their organisational structure and their determination, the commando could have struck.”
The 57-year-old man was wounded in the arms, legs and stomach but was not in a life-threatening condition.
Will he only visit cities with an Irish Embassy?

@Conor Thorne: most embassies don’t include the residence of Ambassadors!!! And their residences are often not large enough to allow for visitors. Just shows lack of knowledge of our foreign presence in other countries
@GClare: exactly, and it could end up costing more. Say for example its an event over a few days and the embassy is way across town, the cost of security to safely transport the President and of securing the embassy might be far in excess of using a local hotel with experience of hosting dignitaries. The reason why certain high end hotels are chosen over and over again for dignitaries of many different countries is because they have the experience, staff and infrastructure to deal with the situation. The Shelbourne would have loads of procedures and experience of dealing with foreign security teams, VIP’s and political staffs etc. The holiday inn simply wouldn’t be able to cope.
@Killian Ryan: The President of Ireland does not arrange his own accommodation abroad this is done by the Department of Foreign Affairs and he has/she would have no say as to what hotel stay in. I heard him on the six news and asking a young girl about voting she asked him why she should vote for him, and he then asked her what kind of Ireland she’d like to see for the future. Firstly, the President cannot change anything in Ireland the position is for the protection of the Constitution and representing the Irish people at home and abroad.
Wouldn’t worry about it Seán, you won’t be staying in any embassies.

Sean Gallagher paid himself a remuneration of 420k in this time, despite having €830,000 of outstanding Irish State Agency grants (tax payer’s money) hanging over his head. If he couldn’t rein in his personal expenses when his company was on it’s knees, how can he be trusted with a 7 year term and nobody to answer to except himself. It’s like the guy wakes up everyday and pretends like his past never happened, deluded to say the least.

He must do. Most Irish people tend to wait for an invitation before announcing that someone is going to put them up.
You’d swear little Mickey D is there on travago booking his trips and rooms etc. This is all done by some public servant and details sent on to his office. Itinerary done up and in all fairness he’s probably the last to know the details. Given his substantial payout etc let’s see him take on the role with average industrial wage and minimum pension afterwards then there might be a story.
Even if I’d never heard of or seen this man before, one look at him is enough for me to deem him untrustworthy. Some people just have a look about them. He looks like a shyster. I mean, who is voting for these types of people time and again?

@Mary McCaffrey: Absolutely. A typical Irish embassy is some rented office space on the nth floor of a commercial building. A couple of offices, 2-3 diplomatic staff including the ambassador, and a few local staff. Toilets shared with other businesses on the same floor. And of course closed at night.
Who cares? Why is he trying to negotiate with us? I couldn’t car if he stayed in a hot air ballon.

@Mr Mystery: why does he deserve more of a chance then any other candidate? What has he been doing over the past number of years that shows he has any interest in serving the public?
Irish people are such hypocrites. We spend most of our time complaining about how public money is wasted yet when someone comes up with a cost saving idea (which also sets a precedence), we belittle that idea. Having the president and his entourage stay in the ambassabor’s residence (where possible) would save money. And more importantly it shows everyone in the civil service/public sector that they are dealing with public money, and if the person at the top takes that seriously then they should also.
