Shireen Abu Akleh. Al Jazeera

UN demands probe into killing of Al Jazeera journalist during Israeli army raid in West Bank

Al Jazeera said Shireen Abu Akleh, a prominent figure in the channel’s Arabic news service, was shot “deliberately” and “in cold blood” by Israeli troops.

THE UN HUMAN rights office said it was “appalled” at the killing of a veteran Al Jazeera reporter in the occupied West Bank and demanded a transparent investigation.

Palestinian-American journalist Shireen Abu Akleh was shot dead today as she covered an Israeli army raid today.

UN human rights chief Michelle Bachelet’s office said it was on the ground and trying to verify the facts.

“We are appalled at the killing of journalist Shireen Abu Akleh while covering an Israeli military operation in Jenin, Palestine,” UN human rights chief Michelle Bachelet’s office said on Twitter.

“Our office is on the ground verifying the facts.

“We urge an independent, transparent investigation into her killing. Impunity must end.”

The Qatar-based TV channel charged that Israeli forces deliberately and “in cold blood” shot Abu Akleh, 51, in the head during the unrest in the Jenin refugee camp.

Israel’s Prime Minister Naftali Bennett said it was “likely” that “armed Palestinians – who were indiscriminately firing at the time – were responsible for the unfortunate death of the journalist”.

Another Al Jazeera journalist, producer Ali al-Samudi, was wounded in the incident in which both wore helmets and vests marked “Press”. He later said no Palestinian fighters were nearby, stressing that otherwise “we would not have gone into the area”.

An AFP photographer reported that Israeli forces were firing in the area and that he then saw Abu Akleh’s body lying on the ground, with no Palestinian gunmen visible at the time.

The Israeli army confirmed it had conducted its latest in a string of military operations in the flashpoint camp but firmly denied it had deliberately targeted a reporter.

“Her death is a tragedy that should not have occurred,” said Israeli army spokesman Amnon Shefler, adding that the military “would never deliberately target non-combatants”.

In a sign of her prominence in the West Bank, residents laid flowers on the roadside as the vehicle carrying her body moved towards Nablus, where an autopsy was to be carried out before her burial in her native Jerusalem.

The UN human rights office said it was “appalled” at the killing of Abu Akleh.

‘Sad death’

Al Jazeera said in a statement that “the Israeli occupation forces assassinated in cold blood Al Jazeera’s correspondent in Palestine”.

It urged the international community to hold the Israeli forces accountable for the “intentional targeting and killing”.

Israeli Foreign Minister Yair Lapid said the country was seeking a “joint pathological investigation into the sad death of journalist Shireen Abu Akleh”.

“Journalists must be protected in conflict zones and we all have a responsibility to get to the truth.”

Senior Palestinian Authority official Hussein al-Sheikh said there had been no contact from Israel about any joint probe and held Israel “responsible” for Abu Akleh’s killing.

The Mission of the State of Palestine in Ireland said the assassination of Shireen is part of a “well-documented and widely acknowledged war and incitement against Palestinian journalists” by Israel.

“Israel and its officials, openly and publicly, reward their soldiers for the killing of Palestinians, including journalists, with full impunity and an emboldened sense of immunity,” it said.

The European Union demanded an independent investigation, while the United States said the fatal shooting must be “investigated transparently”.

US ambassador to Israel Thomas Nides called for a “thorough investigation” into the killing of the US citizen, who joined Al Jazeera in 1997 and became a widely respected Palestinian voice in coverage of the conflict.

The Israeli army released a video showing Palestinian gunfire in the Jenin camp early Wednesday, but not in the precise spot where Abu Akleh was killed.

Rising death toll

The Israeli army has stepped up operations in Jenin, a historic flashpoint in the Israeli-Palestinian conflict, in recent weeks.

Several of the suspects blamed for deadly attacks on Israelis were from the area.

Witnesses in Jenin said today that the army had been targeting the home of an Islamist operative, with an apartment’s heavy metal door blown off its hinges.

Majid Awais, a witness, told AFP that Abu Akleh “turned in panic” when she saw her colleague Samudi was shot and that she was struck by the fatal bullet moments later.

Her death came nearly a year after an Israeli air strike destroyed a Gaza building that housed the offices of Al Jazeera and news agency AP.

Israel has said the building also hosted offices used by key members of the Hamas Islamist group, which controls the Israeli-blockaded Gaza strip.

Tensions have risen in recent months as Israel has grappled with a wave of attacks which has killed at least 18 people since 22 March, including an Arab-Israeli police officer and two Ukrainians.

A total of 31 Palestinians and three Israeli Arabs have died during the same period, according to an AFP tally, among them perpetrators of attacks and those killed by Israeli security forces in West Bank operations.

The latest Palestinian death was an 18-year-old killed by Israeli troops during clashes near Ramallah today. The army said its forces had used rubber bullets to suppress unrest.

The group Reporters Without Borders says seven journalists have been killed while reporting in the Palestinian territories since 2018.

If the stream is so polluted and the only solution is deemed to be the use of bleach, there is something very wrong with the council employees’ thought processes.

Tracking and stopping the source of the pollution in a stream would be too much trouble.

@Bramley Hawthorne: This is Water infrastructure, you start from the symptoms and work back, then give up and just keep paying lip service to the symptoms regardless of the actual state of things. In fairness we’re lucky they didn’t just start charging for use of the beaches.

I’ve been saying about the amount of chlorine in our drinking water for years now it’s disgusting it smells like a swimming pool. Then add a dose of fluoride, have had to buy bottled water for about 12 years now maybe more!

@Colette Kearns: i regularly test water mains for chlorine as a control test for testing the chlorine levels of a spa swimming pool, Ive never had the control test show the presence of chlorine. Mind you thats not to say there aren’t other chemicals present such as flouride

@Colette Kearns: I use a reverse osmosis filter for all drinking and cooking water. The last time I did an analysis the water rain in the rain butt was purer than the unfiltered tap water.

@G man: Not sure what source the spa is taking water from, but chlorine is added to virtually all public water supply with the exception of some group water schemes.

Waterford has backed it’s own decision but it is time to reconsider. It is a stream not a swimming pool. And be a bit more transparent also. Someone shouldn’t have to smell bleach for this issue to come to light.
