The Swedish DJ died on Friday in Oman, aged just 28.

SWEDEN’S PUBLIC BROADCASTER says police in Oman have conducted two autopsies on the body of Grammy-nominated electronic dance DJ Avicii , who died on Friday at age 28.

Public broadcaster SVT, citing information from an anonymous police official in Oman, reports that the autopsies revealed nothing suspicious and foul play has been ruled out in the performer’s death.

The broadcaster says the body has been cleared to be taken back to Avicii’s native Sweden, where he was born as Tim Bergling. Fans in Stockholm observed a minute of silence in his honor on Saturday.

Swedish tabloid Expressen says Avicii stayed at the Muscat Hills Resort while vacationing in Oman. Expressen says he spent time with friends, went kitesurfing and enjoyed the country so much he was planning to stay a few extra days.

The Swedish DJ’s death marks a symbolic coming-of-age for the genre of electronic dance music, one that remains resolutely youthful, becoming the first electronic superstar to die near his prime.

    @Paul P O’Sullivan:

    One of the first “symbolic coming of age for electronic dance music” was Orbital playing the second stage at Glastonbury in 1994. It was then that electronic music moved from a more underground scene to front and centre. The next year Leftism came out from Leftfield, which was a proper crossover album. After ’95 major artists worked with dance producers, Bjork worked with people like Plaid, Madonna with William Orbit, and loads more. But even before that, Ebeneezer Goode from The Shamen went to number 1 in both the UK and Ireland in 1992. I still remember asking my Da to get us a copy of The Prodigy Experience when he went to the UK in 1992. That album charted at 12 in the UK.

    While it is sad that Avicii passed away, he is far down in the legacy of the most amazing genre that is electronic music.

    @John Smith: Yep. I remember Orbital playing ‘ are we here’ at Feile ’95 in Cork – my highlight on the last night. Prodigy got interrupted by a power cut. Carl Cox blew the place assunder. My introduction to electronic music was a good one. Avicii will be missed but he is part of a greater history.

    @Tom Mc Cormack:

    While Kraftwerk are electronic music, they are not really electronic dance music. You’d be better off using Giorgio Morodor, or the rise of disco. Disco was probably the first danceble sound, but the rise of house and techno were the key. Detroit and Chicago, people like Juan Atkins and Frankie Knuckles, were the instigators of the modern electronic scene. Roll on the Summer of Love in the UK in ’89, the rise of the rave and acid house, the Hacienda in Manchester, and you get where we are now.

    On a side, electronic music is the modern equivalent of classical music. For fans of the genre there are tracks that go far beyond a 120 BPM club hit. There are complex melodies and rhythms, layer upon layer of magic. Like a composer choosing which instruments they want an orchestra to play, a producer chooses their tracks and blends them in the same way. An orchestra is like an analogue computer, you input notes and you output music, using people. Software takes code instead of notes, you input code and output music. Orchestras are expensive, I reckon there was thousands of Beethovens around his time, they just couldn’t afford an orchestra.

    There has been a history of famous music performers who have died in their late 20′s. It’s called The 27 Club.
    The deaths are often as a result of drug and alcohol abuse and ultimately suicide.
