The iPlayer is currently only available to users inside the UK BBC

BBC launches a global version of the iPlayer

An iPad app will allow people to view recent and archived BBC content. The iPlayer will be piloted in western Europe before going global.

IPAD OWNERS IN western Europe will be the first to avail of the global roll out of the BBC’s iPlayer.

A mix of recent and archived content will be available to those who download an app and pay a monthly subscription fee which has yet to be decided, but is expected to be less than €7 a month.

The global iPlayer will be different from the version currently available on the BBC website, which is only available to viewers in the UK and offers a “catch-up” service, reports The Guardian. It will allow access to older shows like Fawlty Towers as well as more current episodes of the likes of Doctor Who and Top Gear.

Music programmes, documentaries and comedies will all be available. It’s expected that the iPlayer will slowly be made available globally, with the roll out in western Europe viewed as a pilot project.

excellent news and another nail in the coffee of national broadcasters and scheduled broadcasting. within the next decade the internet will be the delivery mechanism of choice for TV with on demand services increasing over scheduled broadcasting more and more.

the question is what will happen to the likes of RTE when this change happens, one wonders if they will evolve in time to be successful or go the way of many other former bastions of society and business

If it’s anything over 5e it’s overpriced, for 5e you can get a UK VPN with a uk ip which will allow access to iplayer, itv player etc. Much better value

I watch iPlayer programs all the time for free (well apart from the cost of my broadband) – I use a proxy/VPN.

Let’s hope it’s AirPlay compatible. That would make it a real killer-app.

Conor there are plenty of vpn and proxies in app store. Just look for keywords proxy or vpn. For about 5 or 6 euros a month you can get account with uk vpn or proxy and watch all restricted sites as you were in uk, not just bbc. You can even do that for free, however much more hassle and knowledge involved, also not so reliable as paid solution. Post back if you need more guidance / details. Thanks.
