Funding of €900,000 for childcare staff training

The money is part of wider reforms for the pre-school childcare sector following Prime Time’s exposé earlier this year.

ABOUT 630 EXISTING childcare staff will undertake extra training this year as a result of a new funding allocation of €900,000.

Announcing the monetary boost for the sector today, Minister Frances Fitzgerald said it will provide subsidised support to allow the staff to fulfill imminent qualification requirements.

A further €1.5 million will be provided in 2014 for upskilling and further training.

The pre-school childcare sector has been going through numerous reforms since a Prime Time investigation highlighted widespread problems within creches.

Responding to the programme, the government implemented a Pre-School Quality Agenda, which has seen 1,672 inspection reports uploaded to the Pobal website.

Fitzgerald said that the HSE are at an “advanced stage” of recruiting five more inspectors in areas where gaps were identified, including Louth, Dublin South/Wicklow, Cavan/Monaghan and Sligo/Leitrim/West Cavan.

She said the agenda represents a “building block towards the possible introduction of a second universal free pre-school year” which she has championed.

Absolute shambles here. Still struggling to get food. Water supplies are running out. We’ve been allowed out of our house, but can’t leave the compound. And we’re lucky. A friend told me today that he was due to get out of a 15 day lockdown tomorrow, but apparently there’s a positive case in his building so that’s another 14 days. He thinks they’ve put a chain across the door of his apartment building. Created a fire hazard there. People will die here and it’s not going to be from Covid. Cannot wait to get home in the summer.

@Marcus Massey: sorry to hear that m8, I read lots about Shanghai lockdown, it’s disgraceful. Yes 25 million people is hard to manage and supply, but it’s been two weeks, still tons of problems, it’s shame. Last time I saw you here wanted to say get out there, come to my city DaLian, much better than Shanghai. Specially the weather is much better. Good luck, stay safe!
