Rail services getting back to normal after Storm Callum - but flights and ferries disrupted

Here’s the latest on the transport situation in the wake of stormy weather overnight.

LAST UPDATE | 12 Oct 2018

IRISH RAIL HAS confirmed that all services are back operating as normal this morning in the wake of severe disruption due to Storm Callum earlier.

For a time this morning, the DART system was only running between Bray and Malahide due to problems on the line past Howth Junction and at Greystones.

There was also disruption on the Dublin-Belfast line while the 6am Waterford to Dublin train was also delayed after it hit a tree outside Thomastown.

“As Storm Callum passes over Ireland, services across all routes are operating and are subject to some delays due to heavy leaf fall causing low rail adhesion and storm debris on the line,” Irish Rail said in its latest update.

Crews are continuing to clear all all affected areas.

All Bus Éireann services will go ahead as normal, except for the 350 to the Cliffs of Moher, which has been cancelled, and the 401 in Galway, which will operate from stop 6 in Eyre Square (east side).

Dublin Bus services have been operating mostly as normal today, although there were some diversions on the 11 route earlier.

The Luas is operating as normal on both lines.

And there have been a number of cancellations of departing flights at Dublin Airport this morning. Cork and Shannon have been running mostly as scheduled.

Irish Ferries cancelled two Dublin-Holyhead crossings today – the 2am service and the 8.05am. The sailing from Cherbourg in France to Dublin scheduled for this afternoon has been delayed until tomorrow.

Fallen trees on routes around the country were being cleared this morning.

AA Roadwatch reports there are road closures in the Salthill area of Galway, and the Promenade in Tramore is also closed.

Additionally, according to the traffic monitoring service, the Cobh/Fota Rd (R624) remains closed at Carrigaloe due to a mudslide.

And will they increase the carriages on the remaining trains to cope with demand? No.

@Maria Hickey-Fagan: they don’t do that for everyday overcrowding. The passengers barely fit in my train yesterday.

Irish rail have delusions of adequacy. ‘Operational Problems’ is the current favourite, followed closely by ‘signal fault’ and the other classic ‘late arrival of ANOTHER train’ . Throw in ‘low rail adhesion’ to put icing on the cake. And no accountability…

Airports once used terms like crosswinds, engine trouble etc a bit liberally. Actually fallen leaves can indeed cause problems for rail wheels – when railways were more labour-intensive, it was a part of the job in autumn, to brush leaves off the track

@Adrian: awful wording. “No DART behind Bray”. Is it that hard to write?

And why cant people use some cop on when it comes to green bins. Rubbish strewn around our road again this morning after green bins left out overnight for collection today.
Surely you can get up early the next morning and put them out before the truck arrives? Do you have to put all the light stuff on the top? Maybe put the light stuff in a bag and push it down? That would be less likely to blow out when the lid blows open.
And maybe the operator should think about what type of bins they supply? Can a heavier lid or one with a automatic latch be supplied? None of this stuff is rocket science. OK rant over.
