    @Willie Bill Bryan: difficult to see how gardai can prevent stabbings in homes. It takes a certain kind of animal to stab another person. It should always be treated as attempted murder.

    @Willie Bill Bryan: just to clarify…your use of the word “imprisoned” suggests that you don’t believe that people returning to this country from abroad should have to quarantine for 14 days. Is this correct?

    @Alan Clarke: there is a difference between quarantining at home and mandated hotel stay with cost. So you can be in favour of people having to quarantine within the recommended time guidelines… While also being against quarantine in monitored hotels at cost. I say this as someone who will have to return to Ireland soon due to the end of a work contract and who intends to quarantine but don’t have the 2k€+ to spend on a hotel when I have a home to quarantine in and adhere to. Now I do think there should be better follow up but that is a different question. But in general there is more nuance involved in the above question.

    @Barney r:
    I usually think of a Vigilante as someone who acts well after the event and may not be directly impacted.
    The delivery cyclist was there in the moment defending his mate and I don’t see his actions as falling under “Vigilante”.

    A bit of a stretch but if a potential victim’s rottweiler savages a mugger or home intruder, is the potential victim being a vigilante and guilty of a crime?

    Right now there is no way to preempt these random attacks!
    The best possible outcome is rapid medical help for the victims and to quickly identify the perpetrators….The Garda have done a fantastic job on this.

    These delivery cyclists are daily targets of violence and cannot count on any assistance during an attack!

    What should they do to protect themselves??????

    I would define a vigilante to be someone who chooses to take the law into their own hands,which is what anyone does leaving home armed with a knife.I may be mugged or beaten badly, but i expect the law to protect me after or during such event. Someone lost their life over incidient, which may of been racial, theft, self defence? Both parties would walk away if they had that time again. They cannot, the only recourse is to submit to the laws.If delivery people are being targeted, they have to report every incident, not arm themselves which will make things worse. Making events more popular will draw media coverage whether in a good or bad light.
