MICHAEL O’KANE has resigned as editor of the Irish Daily Star.
In a statement released today it’s confirmed that his resignation is as a result of “the publication on 15 September 2012″ which caused issues to arise with the shareholders of Independent Star Limited.
The statement also says that:
Independent News & Media confirms that Michael O’Kane acted at all times in a highly professional and appropriate manner and in the best interests of the Irish Daily Star and followed all editorial policies and guidelines.
On 15 September 2012 the Irish Daily Star published controversial images of Kate Middleton as she sunbathed topless while on holiday with her husband Prince William.
At the time Richard Desmond, the chairman of Northern and Shell, which part-owns the Irish Daily Star said that he would take steps to close down the paper.
Michael O’Kane was suspended two days later as an investigation into the publication of the pictures was carried out.
He worked as part of the editorial team at the Irish Daily Star for ten years. Independent Star Limited has thanked O’Kane for his “valued service”.

Very true and spot on. The star should ceased to exist here now. We are not in the UK, fair game as far as I am concerned. If that was a footballers wag there would be nothing said.

With any luck, the Star will follow its Sunday counterpart and disappear. The puerile obsession Brit tabloids have with nipples is ridiculous!! While I consider Waity Katie to be the Brit version of Kim Kardashian (rich, pointless clotheshorse), the method used to take the pictures was an invasion of her privacy.
The tabloids wouldn’t show boobs unless men wanted to see them. Men just love boobs, it’s probably are greatest weakness.
Still don’t see why this case is special, why don’t heads roll every time they publish some nude pics of a Lady Gaga holiday?
Because the publicity junkie that is Lady Gaga will have invited the paparazzi. Kate Middleton was on private property when the photographer invaded her privacy and took photos without permission.

Pictures acquired by those means appear in these rags all the time. I think its completely despicable and that even if this type of crap sells issues they should be above it. Failing that though, so long as we allow this type of garbage to exist nobody who has placed themselves in the public eye should be offered greater protection from their lecherous gaze.
Those 0irish tabloid editors are not keeping up to the high standards of their British overlords and counterparts!

He got a great severance package. We should not grieve too much. You could hardly call the rag he edited an actual real newspaper. I think that freedom of expression will survive his departure.
All news papers will bite the dust sometime near you yesterday’s news today plus always try cook up a storm no matter who’s life’s they destroy to sell papers even tho most story’s bull. The future is online apps the journal .ie tablets smartphones instant news as it happens on the go
This isn’t a news site Gerard. It’s a trivia/entertainment/re-hashed news/gossip site. If you think this or Broadsheet are reliable sources of news and analysis then the future of accountability is in jeopardy.

EMER . At first I found the Journal rather Dull and a bit wishy washy .. Bit like the free paper handed out in the mornings.. But the feedback has proved me rong! Now I need my fix everyday and enjoy having a barney with other readers who are very well informed . I would like to see more women reply and debate some of the important issues you publish. We men love to bitch so girls , please join in !!!
