France strike wreaks havoc on airline schedules as flights delayed for up to 5 hours

Ryanair has cancelled about 240 flights today.

HOLIDAYMAKERS HAVE BEEN advised to check their airline’s website before travelling to airports this morning to ensure their flights have not been impacted by the air traffic controllers’ strike in France and Belgium.

Aer Lingus has said it plans to operate a full schedule of flights but that delays are expected today.

The company said the most likely routes to be affected are to and from Benelux, the Iberian Peninsula and the south of France. However, passengers to other destinations could also see delays, it said.

In its statement this morning, Ryanair noted that the strikes are “continuing to cause severe disruptions for our customers”.

Delays of up to five hours are being experienced for those flying into and out of France.

“We expect that these delays will continue to build through the morning as the backlog of delayed flights rises,” the airline continued, adding that it had cancelled about 15% of flights (240) as a result. About 24 of these were due to fly in or out of Ireland.

“We expect these disruptions to flights to/from France, Belgium and Spain will worsen this morning as all airlines schedules are heavily disrupted by this unnecessary and regrettable French ATC strike.”

Customers affected will be offered a choice of rebooking on a later flight or a full refund.

This is the second day in a row that Irish passengers will be affected by the French and Belgian ATC strike with Ryanair estimating about 4,000 people were impacted yesterday.

I remember being on holidays in Spain and getting caught up in a French air traffic controllers strike…that was in the late 70′s. While it’s right to have the right to strike, is it right they hold a sizeable portion of a travelling continent to ransom?

The French government should be forced by the EU to pay millions into a fund to pay for the disruption. They obviously have no control over their public servants. How many more times must this be allowed to happen before they man up

There is always the argument about why people so dislike ryanair well this is one of the reason’s, airlingus are doing their best to get people where they need to go even if it means delays ryan air just cancel everything rather than try deal with it. It was the same last year when we were flying home from france during the strike we were on the late flight home with airlingus and they put all the people from their cancelled flights from that day on it, there wasn’t an empty seat and we all got home. Ryan air just canceled every single flight and the people flying with them were stranded.

People think they have it hard over a flight delay my god the things people worry over and yes the French have a right to strike if they feel aggrieved pity we don’t exercise our right to strike people are sick of being bullied by governments

I realise there are worse things that could happen, but it’s not so unreasonable to be annoyed that flights you paid good money for are being cancelled because the boys in France downed tools.

I flew back to Dublin late last night from Tenerife with Aer Lingus. It was the only flight out of Tenerife yesterday that was not delayed. All other flights(mainly to the uk) were at least 3-4hrs delayed. I was never as happy to see that Aer Lingus shamrock symbol on the plane getting me home on time!!
